Around the World in Motorsports: March 4-6
|
- Sunday night saw Gresini Racing's Enea Bastianini take the lead away from Pol Espargaro with four laps to go. From there, Bastianini held on to take his first career MotoGP victory. He was only a third of a second ahead of KTM's Brad Binder at the finish. Pol Espargaro went wide in turn 1 right after Bastianini took the lead and
dropped to third. Pol's brother Aleix was fourth, while Marc Marquez was fifth.
- The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series was in Paige, Tex. for the Texas Two-Step last weekend. Friday night saw Sheldon Haudenschild run down Cory Eliason on lap 22, take the lead and pull away to take his second win of the year. Haudenschild's margin of victory was 2.578 seconds over Eliason. Brad Sweet was third, then Logan
Schuchart and Donny Schatz.
Saturday night saw Sam Hafertepe Jr. dominate the night. He was fastest in time trials, won the Dash and started from pole. However, his excellent form ran out in the feature as Carson Macedo ran him down with a few laps to go. Macedo made the pass on lap 27, then held on for the win. Hafertepe Jr. was second, then James McFadden, Schuchart and
David Gravel. For more about the action from Cotton Bowl Speedway, check out the most recent edition of Thinkin' Dirty at Frontstretch.
- Saturday night saw Monster Energy AMA Supercross teams venture to Daytona Beach for one of their biggest races of the year. Cooper Webb was able to grab the holeshot and led early. Further back, Jason Anderson and Malcolm Stewart resumed their rivalry from last week. Contact was made in turn 2 that stacked up part of the field. Later on in
the lap, Stewart and Anderson collided and crashed, putting both riders well down the order. Stewart would finish eighth, while Anderson was ninth.
Webb opened up a decent advantage over the pack, but Eli Tomac was able to run him down in the closing laps. With 45 seconds to go, Webb got held up in the whoops behind Shane McElrath, which allowed Tomac to sweep past into the lead. From there, Tomac pulled away to claim his record-breaking sixth Daytona Supercross win. Webb was 5.273 seconds
behind in second, then Chase Sexton, Dylan Ferrandis and Justin Barcia.
Points-wise, Tomac's victory and the first-lap shenanigans between Stewart and Anderson allowed Tomac to expand his points lead up to 17 over Anderson. Webb is third, then Stewart and Sexton.
In the 250cc East class, Stilez Robertson won the holeshot, but Honda's Jett Lawrence was able to take the lead in turn 2 on the first lap. From there, Lawrence was untouched as he pulled away to take a dominant victory.
Lawrence ended up 14.005 seconds ahead of Robertson. Cameron McAdoo was third, then Pierce Brown and Enzo Lopes. As a result, Lawrence is back in the 250cc class points lead by five over McAdoo. Robertson is up to third, then Lopes and Brown.

Seeking the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs: Kyle Larson Takes Points Lead With Late Pit Strategy
by Phil Allaway
Kyle
Larson had a strong run on Sunday, but was not in position to win until the final caution. A two-tire pit stop put him up front. While teammate Alex Bowman dispatched of him, he was still able to finish second, enough to boost him from a tie for eighth to the points lead. His advantage is six points over Martin Truex Jr., who was racing for the lead prior to the final caution. He ended up finishing
eighth. Joey Logano is down one place to ninth after finishing 14th. Austin Cindric struggled Sunday, spinning out early on before finishing 19th. That dropped him from the points lead to fourth.
Kyle Busch was in position to win before the final yellow. He was clearly disappointed with a fourth-place finish, but that moved him up from a tie for eighth to fifth. Aric Almirola kept up his top 10 streak with another sixth-place finish. That moved him up one place to
sixth. Chase Elliott kept himself out of trouble Sunday and finished ninth. That moved him up 12 places to seventh. Bowman's victory moved him up a race-high 17 positions to eighth after entering the race in 25th.
Austin Dillon and Bubba Wallace are now tied for ninth. Dillon is up from a tie for 14th after finishing 11th. Wallace ran as high as seventh and was in position for a top 15 before crashing with a few laps to go and dropping back to 25th. Brad
Keselowski and Kurt Busch are tied for 11th. Keselowski spun early on and never recovered, finishing 24th. Kurt Busch finished 13th.
Ryan Blaney is down nine places to 13th after he crashed into Keselowski and put himself out of the race, finishing 36th. Chase Briscoe and Erik Jones are down into a tie for 14th after both drivers crashed out of the race. In Jones' case, he crashed out of seventh with just a
couple of laps to go. Finally, Kevin Harvick and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. are tied for 16th. Harvick finished 12th, while Stenhouse was 21st.
By virtue of his seventh-place finish at Fontana, Harvick gets the tiebreaker over Stenhouse and has the theoretical final spot in the playoffs. The duo are one point ahead of Tyler Reddick, who gained three spots after finishing seventh. Ty Dillon dropped to 19th after finishing 20th,
while Ross Chastain's third-place finish moved him up to 20th.

Seeking the Xfinity Series Playoffs: Noah Gragson Snags Points Lead With Consistent Form
by Phil Allaway
JR Motorsports' Noah Gragson has had a very strong start to 2022 and Saturday was no exception. He led 52 laps and won the first two stages, but had to recover from an early green-flag pit stop to finish second. That allowed him to take the points lead. Gragson's advantage is 17 points over
Ty Gibbs, who passed Gragson late to take his first win of the year. AJ Allmendinger started from the pole, but struggled in the middle of the race before recovering to finish ninth. That dropped him from the points lead to third. Justin Allgaier led the most laps and finished fifth. That still dropped him one place to fourth.
Josh Berry moved up two places to fifth after finishing fourth. Daniel Hemric is up three places to sixth after finishing third. Riley Herbst crashed late and staggered to a 14th-place finish. That dropped Herbst from a tie for fourth to seventh in points. Anthony Alfredo
struggled all day to a 17th-place finish, but stays in eighth.
Despite getting caught up in a late crash, Sam Mayer moved up three places to ninth after finishing 25th and earning 17 stage points. Austin Hill was eliminated in a late crash, but ran strong all day. Earning 11 stage points was enough to move him up to 10th. Ryan Sieg had a miserable day after
getting air-packed into the wall on lap 4. A second incident ended his day and left him in 37th. That dropped him from a tie for fourth to 11th. Brandon Jones is up five places to 12th after finishing 10th.

Seeking the Camping World Truck Series Playoffs: Chandler Smith Snatches Points Lead With Friday Night Victory

Kyle Busch Motorsports' Chandler Smith took the lead on the final lap Friday night to win the Victoria's Voice Foundation 200. With that victory came the points lead. Chandler's point lead is five points over Tanner Gray, who finished fifth. Ty
Majeski is up two places to third after finishing 10th. Ben Rhodes is down two positions to fourth after he crashed out of the race following contact with Majeski. Before that, Rhodes won the first two stages, limiting his losses.
Stewart Friesen was quiet all night, but rose up to third in the closing laps. That boosted him up from a tie for 10th to fifth in points. Matt DiBenedetto and Carson Hocevar are tied for sixth. DiBenedetto finished sixth, while Hocevar led early before dropping back to
13th. Austin Wayne Self is up to eighth after finishing ninth.

Letter of the Race: Sunday's Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube was brought to you by the letter U for Unlikely. While yes, Hendrick Motorsports put three of their cars in the top five Sunday, you had Erik Jones up front again. Ross Chastain led the most laps. Through three races, there is a lot more parity before it. - Phil Allaway
|
Quotes to Remember: Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube
compiled by Phil Allaway
"No. I was really surprised [that the two tires worked as well as they did]. On the front row there, you have to run so much throttle. We had been free on the short run, pretty good on the
long run. I mean, I kind of feel like I know. Obviously a lot has changed with this race car, but typically two tires tighten you up a ton.
"We were on old tires earlier in the day, like cold old tires. When we had the pit road issue, we came back and put old tires on. I was super tight the whole run. I was worried we were going to be super tight.
"On the front row, you got to drive it like it’s going to stick. Thankfully it stuck." - Alex Bowman, race winner
"I was happy we made that call. It’s kind of what I wanted to do and when I heard them say we were taking two tires, I was pleased by it. The grip was surprising. I had good grip there on
two tires. I just got a little too focused on side-drafting him into [turn 3]. Maybe if I could play it back again, I would try and just get a better arc and angle into three because when I got in there next to him, I just got really tight and had to lift out of the throttle.
"Congrats to Alex [Bowman] and their team. They were really fast all day. We had our moments where we were good and we just fought really hard. I’m happy with the effort from our team and look forward to Phoenix [Raceway]." - Kyle Larson, finished second
"Yeah, it's a dream come true. This is what all the work is for. This is why we train and try to build our whole lives and careers once we realize we can race at this level, is to have race cars like that. I couldn’t be more proud of Trackhouse, and thankful for Justin Marks and Chevrolet.
"To have the ACM’s on the car, be able to go over and hang out now tomorrow night is really cool. It took a lot of patience inside the car. It’s tough for me to not get too aggressive and a lot of neutral thinking. Josh Wise and a book by Trevor Moawad really helped me today. That’s progress." - Ross Chastain, finished
third
"True testament to everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing. Really appreciate my guys on the [No. 18 team], but also the [Nos. 11, 19 and 20 teams] – all of them for coming over and pitching in.
Everybody had a hand in being able to make us go today. So really appreciate that. Great Ethel M Chocolates Toyota Camry TRD Today. I mean, I was fast at the end and trying just to do what I could to hold the lead there with [Martin Truex Jr.] Felt like I inched away finally and we were coming to the white or something, I don’t know what it was, but anyways, it wasn’t meant to be. Not our day. See you next week." - Kyle Busch, finished fourth
"Yeah, you know we had a good run. Congrats to Alex [Bowman]. You know we needed a good run. We’ve had a rough couple weeks. We’ve had speed everywhere, but just not the finishes. Thanks to Axalta, Chevrolet, Liberty University, everybody on this car. Great to get a top five, obviously we want a win and I felt like there were times in
this race that we had potential, but we just have to clean up some of the little things. We’ve got to clean up some of those things on pit road and get a little better and I think we will have a shot to win." - William Byron, finished fifth
"We fight. That’s the beauty of this race team. We’re still learning this car. There’s a lot to learn about it and we’re still trying to figure a lot of things out. Practice is great, but we’ve got to make adjustments throughout the race and I feel like every race we’re learning more and more and more and we’re building a notebook. We’re
making adjustments throughout the race and trying to figure it out. This team has so much fight in it and so much grit that it’s a lot of fun to race with these guys. We’ll keep digging and try and keep this streak alive of all these top 10 finishes. It’s a lot of fun when you run up front." - Aric Almirola, finished sixth
"I don’t know, I was able to get a decent finish out of it so that’s good to get a top-10. The DeWalt Camry was fast and I felt like we were capable of racing for the win. The 18 and the 19 looked like they had it before the yellow came out and I was every bit as good as them. Just have to put it all together." - Christopher Bell,
finished 10th
"I don’t know. We were running really good and then the 34 stayed out that one time on tires and kind of just messed us up. We lost a lot of track position and then he got loose and I was so sideways. I came across and got the 99. I don’t know if that damaged it or what, but I would say the last 5-10 laps before I finally spun out the
rear was bouncing really really bad and I think it broke something or the tire went down. I don’t know. I just went in the corner and the thing spun out. It’s just really unfortunate. I thought we were gonna be really really good. We’ve had good speed all year long, so we’ll just try to dig out of a hole next week." - Chase Briscoe, finished 35th (Crashed out)
"[Brad Keselowski] spun out on his own right in front of me and I plowed into him. I’m not happy about anything and I don’t mean to be happy about anything when someone loses it right in front of you and ends our day. I won’t call it bad luck, but when someone just spins out in front of you and wipes you out, there’s nothing to be happy
about. We had a pretty fast car and nothing to show for it." - Ryan Blaney, finished 36th (Crashed out)
