Records and
facts
Last year's EchoPark Texas Grand Prix was a tricky one. Most of the Cup on-track activity before the race was in the dry. It rained Sunday morning, which resulted in NASCAR requiring everyone to grid
up on rain tires, then allowed everyone to switch during the pace laps (Note: A rule change has put a stop to such
rulings).
The race was dry early on, then the heavy rains showed up. A red flag was thrown because of near-zero visibility on the newly-repaved longest straight. The rain eased up, then returned with a
vengeance to end the race
early.
In the pouring rain, Chase Elliott was able to slip past teammate Alex Bowman on lap 50 and held on until the yellow came out due to impassable conditions. When the race was called, Elliott had the
victory. Kyle Larson was second, then Joey Logano, Ross Chastain and AJ
Allmendinger.
Of the active drivers in Cup, Chase Elliott is the most successful driver on road courses with seven victories in 19 career starts. That includes two wins at Watkins Glen, two on Charlotte Motor
Speedway's ROVAL and one each at Daytona International Speedway's road course, Road America and COTA. Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. both have four victories on road courses. Kyle Larson has three wins, while Kevin Harvick and AJ Allmendinger have two
each.

What?!
"The entire field had only two laps in dry conditions last year, and that was during qualifying. We don’t have many data points to draw from. We will be able to pull a little from the ROVAL, but so much has changed since then. The general characteristics of the car haven’t really changed, but
physical parts, pieces, components and rules are way different." - Cliff Daniels, crew chief for Kyle
Larson
"COTA is our first road course race with this car. I don’t think anybody has really driven it a lot on road courses. We had the test at Charlotte there early on, but it seemed like every team was kind of rotating drivers through. So I don’t think any of us got a ton of time with it, but you know
these cars, really a lot of the design pieces come from a road race background – some of the things [NASCAR sees] on the IMSA side of things. I really think they’re probably going to suit road racing well. I think they’ll be fine, and I don’t know that the race will look a ton different, honestly. I think the cars will drive fine. Certainly, getting used to those small things that are going to be a little bit different and the shifting and the brakes [will be important]. Just how they act at
some of those different style of corners. I think it will be fine." - Chase
Elliott
"I’ve been waiting all year to get this new car on a road course. I feel that this new car will perform at its best, a lot better than the old car, on a road course. It has characteristics of a sports car and I want to take advantage of
that.
"Our hope is that the road courses are going to be great for our team. They really suit my road racing background, and I’m looking forward to getting back out to COTA where we ran well. We feel we can duplicate that result, and with the right execution, we can contend for a win." - Michael
McDowell
"From the racetrack standpoint, I feel like I’m kind of going there for the first time, just because last year I don’t think I ever ran a single lap in the dry. I think we practiced, qualified, everything in the wet, so it’s going to be like learning a whole new racetrack this week. I know from
a facility standpoint it’s pretty remarkable. It’s super cool to go out there. Even last year in the rain, there were a ton of fans out there, so I’m excited to see what it looks like this year. I didn’t get to do a ton of exploring in the city last year, but I know Austin is a really cool town. I’m going to try to do a little bit more this year while we’re there, just because we’re there a little bit longer than usual. I’m super excited to get back. I’m really excited, truthfully, just to get
this Next Gen car on a road course. Based on some of the testing we did on the [Charlotte ROVAL], they’re a blast to run on the road course. I’m curious to see what the racing will be like. I think it will definitely change the landscape of these road-course races. I think you’re going to see a lot more guys that are competitive than in years past because you can drive this car so much harder. It does a lot of things a lot better than the old car, so it’ll be interesting to see how that works
out and plays out. It looks like the weather is going to be really good and it should be a great show." - Chase
