Frontstretch Folio: AdventHealth 400
by Phil Allaway
This weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series travels to Kansas Speedway for the first of two visits in 2021. Coverage of
the AdventHealth 400 starts with NASCAR RaceDay at 1:30 p.m. EDT on FOX Sports 1. Race coverage begins at 3 p.m. with the green flag around 3:10. It can be heard on MRN Radio and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Channel
90).
Records and
facts
Last year's Buschy McBusch Race 400 (so named because of a Name the Race contest from Busch Beer) had a dominant driver in Kyle Larson, who led 132 of 267 laps. Larson was up front until Kyle Busch was able to pass him on a restart with 11 laps to go. After a crash in turn 4 involving Christopher Bell and JTG-Daugherty Racing teammates Ryan Preece and Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Busch was able to hold on during the final two-lap sprint to
win.
Busch ended up a third of a second ahead of Kevin Harvick. Brad Keselowski was third, followed by Matt DiBenedetto and Chase Elliott. Kyle Larson ended up finishing a disappointing
19th.
Hamlin, Kevin Harvick and Joey Logano all have three wins at Kansas, which is tied for the most all-time along with the now-retired Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson. Five separate drivers have two wins each. Of the three active drivers with three Kansas victories, only Hamlin has a win there that came before the track was reconfigured in
2012.

Say
What?!
"At Fontana, we were able to run really close to the wall, so I would imagine it’s pretty easy to
run next to the wall at Kansas. I love Kansas – it’s definitely one of my favorite tracks. It does have multiple lanes, typically. If that top lane gets going really fast, it does make it hard to pass. I hope we can run the bottom, middle and top." - Kyle
Larson
"I think this
weekend’s race at Kansas Speedway is going to be a lot like the races we’ve seen at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The race will be a very unforgiving one. There will be a lot of running the wall with little to no room for error. The margin of error is so small and if you make one mistake, you could take yourself and others out of the race. It’s going to be a lot of strategy and deciding when the right time is to take a risk. Certainly, with my driving style, running the wall is going to be a huge
part of my race but it’s also important to listen to my crew chief and spotter and weight the risk versus reward. You don’t want to get out there in the first stage and dive into the wall and end up finishing 38th." - Tyler
Reddick
"I’m excited
to get to Kansas. I think we’ve shown a lot of improvement on the mile-and-a-halves this year and we’ve definitely [had] speed. If we can put everything together and get a good starting spot I think we should be able to turn things around. The last few weeks haven’t been the best but we’ve got a good group of guys who don’t give up and I know we’re capable of more, we just need everything to go right to put ourselves in position for another
win.
"It helps to
know I have been successful at Kansas, but the Cup Series is a whole different level of competition. Now, I got the win earlier this year and we’ve been up front more in these first few races than in all of last season, so I think mentally I’m more prepared for what’s coming than I was last year. We can’t really compare what we saw last year to what is coming because of the new car. I’m used to adapting, that’s something you have to do a lot in dirt racing, and we’ve had to do it a lot with this
new car. Once we get on track for practice and see what we’ve got I think I’ll be better able to judge what I need to be comfortable and then I can start thinking about how I can use what I know about Kansas to run my best race." - Chase
Briscoe
