Records and
facts
Last year's Verizon 200 at the Brickyard was a wacky affair. Tyler Reddick won the first two stages, but ultimately wasn't a factor in the
finish.
The race was marred by two huge crashes late that were directly attributable to sausage curbs. The first one saw the curb break and rip splitters off. This sent drivers everywhere. A second crash was triggered by Michael McDowell launching himself into a spin and collecting
others.
On the final restart, Chase Briscoe went off into the grass at the turns 1 and 2 chicane, drawing a penalty for corner cutting. Before he could serve the penalty, he got in the back of Denny Hamlin, spinning Hamlin out of the lead. This resulted in a parking. He would be credited with
26th.
Kaulig Racing's AJ Allmendinger was able to avoid the chaos and slip through to claim the victory for the then-part-time team. Allmendinger won by .929 seconds over Ryan Blaney. Kyle Larson was
third, then Chase Elliott and Matt DiBenedetto. Hamlin ended up
23rd.
