- Former businessman Billy Joe McCombs, also known as "Red" McCombs, died Monday at the age of 95. McCombs was
extremely successful in business, owning his own network of car dealerships and co-founding Clear Channel Communications (now iHeart Media) in 1972.
McCombs is probably best known in sports as an owner of multiple franchises, starting with the ABA's Dallas
Chaparrals. He moved the fledgling franchise to San Antonio and renamed the team the San Antonio Spurs.
Later on, McCombs sold the Spurs and bought the Denver Nuggets. He also purchased the Minnesota Vikings in 1998,
owning the team until 2005. In motorsports, he was an early investor in what is now Circuit of the Americas near Austin. Turn 1 is named "Big Red" in his honor. We at Frontstretch send our condolences to the McCombs family.
