Around the World in Motorsports: March 10-12 |
- The FIA World Endurance Championship was on hand in Sebring last weekend for the Prologue, the preseason open test
session ahead of Friday's 1000 Miles of Sebring. Teams had roughly 12 hours of track time over two days. Day No. 1 saw Toyota Gazoo Racing's Jose Maria Lopez top the chart in the morning at 124.427 mph, .085 seconds
quicker than teammate Ryo Hirakawa. United Autosports' Phil Hanson was fastest in LMP2 at 120.513 mph, .03 seconds quicker than Team WRT's Robert Kubica. Yifei Ye in the one-off second JOTA LMP2 car was third. GTE-Am was led by Michelle Gatting in the Iron Dames Porsche at 112.281 mph. Gatting was .022 seconds ahead of teammate Alessio Picariello. The afternoon running saw Chip Ganassi Racing's Earl Bamber go fastest with a lap at 124.173 mph. Bamber's lap was
.014 seconds faster than Toyota's Sebastien Buemi. Lopez was another tenth back. In LMP2, Hanson was fastest again at 120.762 mph, .042 seconds quicker than Prema Racing's Daniil Kyvat. Team WRT's Louis Deletraz was third. GTE-Am saw Gatting go fastest again at 112.952 mph, .261 seconds faster than the Ferrari of AF Corse's Ulysse de Pauw. - Day No. 2's morning session saw Toyota's Mike Conway go fastest at 124.123 mph, a mere eight-thousandths of a
second faster than teammate Buemi. Porsche Penske Motorsport's Michael Christensen was third. United Autosports' Filipe Albuquerque was fastest in LMP2 with a lap at 121.761 mph, .283 seconds faster than Prema Racing's Doriane Pin. GTE-Am was led by the Porsche of Team Project 1-AO's Matteo Cairoli with a lap at 112.981 mph, .097 seconds quicker than Picariello and Gatting. The afternoon session saw Toyota's Brendon Hartley go fastest with a lap at
124.418 mph, .117 seconds quicker than Conway. Richard Westbrook was third in the Cadillac. LMP2 was led by Kubica with the best LMP2 lap of the test at 121.486 mph. He was nearly a half-second faster than Ye, then Hanson. GTE-Am was led by GR Racing's Ben Barker with a lap at 112.903 mph. This was one-hundredth of a second faster than Richard Mille AF Corse's Lilou Wadoux. Cairoli was third. There were a number of incidents during the test as well. The biggest of these
crashes occurred right at the end of Prologue when JOTA Sport's David Heinemeier Hansson crashed after having contact with AF Corse's Thomas Flohr when Flohr was trying to pit. Takeshi Kimura also crashed his Ferrari Sunday. James Calado crashed the No. 51 Ferrari 499P In turn 1 Sunday morning, while Peugeot TotalEnergies' Gustavo Menezes
slid into the tires Sunday afternoon. Saturday was calmer, but still had a couple of incidents. |

Seeking the NASCAR Cup Series Championship: Alex Bowman Slips Into The Points Lead by Phil Allaway
Alex Bowman had a relatively quiet day in Phoenix, bringing home his Ally Chevrolet in ninth. That wouldn't have been enough to take the lead until
Denny Hamlin and Ross Chastain collided on the final lap in turn 1. That dropped Chastain far enough down the order for Bowman to take the points lead. His advantage is three points over Kevin Harvick, who would have won Sunday had Harrison Burton not spun late in the race. Chastain is down to third after finishing 24th due to his late wall contact. Two-time winner William Byron is up another nine spots to fourth. Kyle Larson led on the final restart before dropping down to fourth. The performance still moved him up to a tie for fifth with Christopher
Bell. Bell finished sixth despite pitting before the Green-White-Checker restart for tires. Hamlin is down one place to seventh after the late crash dropped him to 23rd. Ryan Blaney is up seven places to eighth after running up to second late. Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. are
tied for ninth. Busch recovered from two penalties on the same stop under green to finish eighth. Truex struggled all day and finished 17th. Daniel Suarez is down seven places to 11th after finishing a disappointing 22nd. Joey Logano is down four more positions to 12th after failing to score any stage points en route to 11th. Brad Keselowski is down two places to 13th after an 18th-place finish that really wasn't indicative of how he ran Sunday. Chris Buescher is
down to 14th, while Ricky Stenhouse Jr. is now 15th. Bubba Wallace remains in 16th, the last driver in the playoffs. Wallace has an 11-point advantage over Austin Cindric, who had a mediocre run to 25th. Corey LaJoie is 18th, while Michael McDowell is 19th. Tyler Reddick gained 14 positions

Seeking the NASCAR Xfinity Series Championship: Austin Hill Expands Lead After Justin Allgaier Crashes by Phil Allaway
Austin Hill ran well Saturday in Phoenix, leading 22 laps and finishing seventh. That was a good enough
performance for Hill to keep his lead and expand it. His advantage is now 30 points over John Hunter Nemechek. Despite damage suffered Saturday morning in practice, Nemechek still finished sixth. Justin Allgaier won the first two stages before crashing out. The 20 stage points minimized his losses as he is still in third. Chandler Smith and Riley Herbst are tied for fourth. Chandler gets the tiebreaker by virtue of
his third-place finish in Las Vegas. On Saturday, Chandler finished fifth, while Herbst was fourth. Sammy Smith and Sam Mayer are tied for sixth in points. Sammy wins the tiebreaker by virtue of
his victory Saturday, while Mayer was 11th. Cole Custer is down one place to eighth after finishing 12th. Josh Berry is down one spot to ninth despite finishing eighth. The eighth-place finish came despite getting spun
out twice. Daniel Hemric is up three places to 10th thanks to a 10th-place finish and 14 stage points. Sheldon Creed is up five spots to 11th after finishing third. Parker Kligerman recovered from a crash in qualifying to finish 15th, which dropped him to 12th. Kligerman is the final driver currently in the playoffs. He has a 12-point lead over Brett Moffitt, who recovered
from a spin to finish 13th and moved up two places in the process. Ryan Sieg and Jeb Burton are tied for 14th (Sieg wins the tiebreaker thanks to his eighth-place finish in Daytona), while Joe Graf Jr. is 16th. Point Standings (1-16): 1) Austin Hill 195, 2) John

Letter of the Race: Sunday's United Rentals Work United 500k was brought to you by the letter S for Slippy. NASCAR's new rules package
for short tracks and road courses debuted Sunday in Phoenix. The result was a lot more tire wear and teams moving around a lot more. - Phil Allaway |
Quotes to Remember: United Rentals Work United 500k complied by Phil Allaway
"I owe the last couple of weeks to h[Rudy Fugle]. He’s done a really good job strategy-wise, and execution-wise we’ve done a good job to put ourselves in those positions on the front row with a shot at the end. Thanks to everybody back at Hendrick Motorsports
putting together great cars and just doing a great job. It’s a big credit to them, the engine shop, Mr. [Rick] Hendrick and everybody. It’s cool to have Valvoline back on the car with a really historic-looking paint scheme, so it’s nice to get into Victory Lane." - William Byron, race
winner "The last restart I thought… I got to the bottom of those guys into turn 2… that I was in a good spot for turn 3. I think [Tyler Reddick] kind of helped [William Byron] – got him a push down the back and got him a good spot. He had an advantage going in there. Close… but I wasn’t really close enough to [Byron] going into turn 3 to do anything.
Overall: Pretty good day. We got a lot better all day. We finished a little better than I thought we’d run. So, that was positive." - Ryan Blaney, finished second "I just needed to execute on that restart. Just didn’t get the launch I needed to and wasn’t on William [Byron's] back
bumper to take advantage of it in turn 1. It’s very frustrating naturally – I think last year [was] kind of the same thing. I didn’t have the best of restarts and finished third. Everyone on The Beast Unleashed Toyota Camry TRD did a really good job. This car was solidly like a third-to-fifth-place car all day long, so to bring it home third is great but obviously when you are on four and you get position there at the end with that restart, you want to capitalize, so frustrating for sure." -
Tyler Reddick, finished third "We got lucky with the one caution, and the team made a great call to take two tires and get us out in the lead. Restarts are just tough. I felt like I ran William up
pretty high and expected him to lose some grip, but he did a really good job of holding it to my outside and clearing me down the back. Yeah I’m pissed off but a great fight by the team, a great car and way better than we were here last year. It’s a long season, but hopefully we’re in the final four when we come back here in November and can have a run similar to that with speed and try to execute a little bit better in the end." - Kyle Larson, finished
fourth "That one is not fun to swallow. We had a great car and didn’t need that caution at the end. We had a strong car and a chance to win. Just hate missing an opportunity when you have a car that strong." - Kevin Harvick, finished fifth "I felt like the Rheem Camry was everything that I needed to best of the rest again – [Kyle Larson] and [William Bryon]. [Byron] fell off a little bit at the end and I was able to get him, but [Larson] was really fast and [Kevin Harvick] on the long run was really good
too. Really happy with the consistency. We will keep fighting to try to get a little bit better." - Christopher Bell, finished sixth "I think we overall had a pretty strong and solid day. Starting that far back in the pack, it just takes forever to get up there. I thought my car was
good enough – if you would have put it in the lead, I would have been fine staying there. But, it was just a matter of getting up there – it takes a long time. It’s like every green flag run you pick up three or four, every pitstop you maybe get one and the restart you get one. It just takes forever to get up there when you start 24th. I thought we ran it pretty good as a complete race. On that second-to-last restart, I think we could have done a better job and been in a little bit better
position. Overall, we really needed that type of run. We were fast all day, and not scratching our heads. Hopefully we can build on this and get that going." - Chase Briscoe, finished seventh "It’s been since 2016 I think since we’ve finished in the top 10 here, so happy for that. I
have to figure out how to get better here. Obviously I think our car is stronger than that when you look at our teammates. Fundamentally, I have something messed up. Just have to keep working on it, but proud of my No. 48 Ally Best Friends Chevy team. Good points day." - Alex Bowman, finished ninth "It was a really solid day for the No. 9 Kelley Blue Book Chevy team. We were able to improve a lot from what we had last week. We were able to stay on the lead lap basically the whole race. We had a couple of runs in there that were really good. A couple runs where we fell back a little bit, but it’s just all part of a learning experience for me. These races are so long and I need to be able to learn this car a little bit better where I can give Alan [Gustafson] a little bit
better direction on how to help me. "Towards the end, we found that we were a little bit on the free side of our better runs. At the end there, we were probably going to finish 15th or 16th, which I was still pretty happy with. Obviously had the cautions there and we executed a couple of really good restarts there and was able to get a top 10." -
