- On Sunday morning, the FIA announced a new contract that will see the Grand Prix of Austria remain at the Red Bull Ring through the 2030 season. It is a
three-year extension to add to an existing extension to 2027 that was announced earlier this year. - ROWE Racing's Philipp Eng, Marco Wittmann and NIck Yelloly took the overall victory in this past weekend in the Crowdstrike 24H Spa, a joint round of the
Intercontinental GT Challenge and Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Endurance Cup. The race was overshadowed by the death of Dilano van't Hoff, who died in a multi-car crash Saturday at Radillon during the Formula Regional European Championship event. -
Saturday saw the SRO hold their annual press conference, where series schedules were announced. For Fanatec GT World Challenge America powered by AWS, a provisional version of the 2024 season was released. It is all but unchanged from 2023. Seeking the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs: Martin Truex Jr. Maintains Lead Despite Late Crash by Phil Allaway
Martin Truex Jr. had a strong car on Sunday, but had a series of handling woes destroy his day. Eventually, the brakes faded and put him into the tire barrier. Despite a 32nd-place finish, Truex maintains his points lead, but it is down to nine points over William Byron.
Byron slid into the barriers on lap 49, triggering a traffic jam on Jackson Street, but recovered to finish 13th. Ross Chastain finished 22nd, but earned the same 15 points as Truex. He is still 18 points back, but in third. Christopher Bell won the first two stages, then crashed in the third. Despite that, he made up 24 points and is right in the hunt. Kyle Busch finished fifth despite going hard into the tires on the third lap of the race. That keeps him in fifth and allowed him to gain significant ground. Denny Hamlin is up one place to sixth after finishing 11th. Kevin Harvick is down to seventh after a
late incident dropped him to 29th. Kyle Larson is up one place to eighth after finishing fourth. Ryan Blaney hit the wall exiting turn 6 and dropped three laps. A 33rd-place finish dropped him to ninth.
In the last three races, Blaney has gone from leading the points by 13 to 85 behind. Joey Logano remains in 10th after finishing eighth. Chris Buescher is back up to 11th after finishing 10th. Tyler Reddick and Brad Keselowski are tied for 12th. Reddick led laps early and was the best running driver that stopped at the end of stage two when he crashed in turn 6. He ultimately finished 28th. Keselowski finished 24th. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. had a terrible weekend where his
primary car got wiped out in practice, then he crashed late in the race with Bubba Wallace. The crash keeps Stenhouse in 14th and Wallace 15th. Ty Gibbs finished ninth and moved up two places to 16th, the last spot in the playoffs. Gibbs has a six-point lead over Daniel Suarez, who ran well until clipping a car while trying to avoid the traffic jam on Jackson Street. That damaged the left front fender and dropped him to a 27th-place finish. Michael McDowell finished seventh and moved up two spots to 18th. Letter of the Race: Sunday's Grant Park 220 was brought to you by the Letter M for Missed Opportunity. None of it was NASCAR's fault, but the weather completely destroyed NASCAR's inaugural street weekend.
All but one of the concerts were cancelled, torrential rains, lightning, shortened races. Luckily, none of the drivers got hurt. Once the rain finally went away, the racing was at least decent. - Phil Allaway |
Quotes to Remember: Grant Park 220 compiled by Phil Allaway
"Wow, when we had that strategy back to 18th, I started to worry a bit. But had some full stands on some people, and the racing was really good, everyone was respectful. It was tough, but a lot of fun. "I’m doing one more year in [Australia] and then I’d love to come over here." - Shane van Gisbergen, race winner "It was tough. I put it in the tire barrier yesterday and we stayed up all night. I stayed with the guys through the rain; rewrapped this thing and put a new body on it. Benesch came on for this weekend. Congrats to Project91. It sucks, obviously, where we are right now – we aren’t in position to win
every week, so coming that close obviously is not what you want. But just really proud of everyone at Kaulig Racing and what an awesome event. Can’t wait to come back next year." - Justin Haley, finished second "First off, I really appreciate everyone on our Hooters team for just fighting all weekend. I did not do a very good job yesterday, obviously crashing and crashing again
today and just kept putting us in big holes. So I have to certainly be better, but I appreciate the effort and the willingness to keep fighting by everybody on our team. I appreciate that and looking forward to going back to work and trying to get better. "Huge congratulations to Shane [van Gisbergen], man that was a clinic. He made us look really, really
bad. He is going to go home and tell all of his friends how bad we are. So, I am looking forward to getting to work and hopefully we can figure out how to run with him at the next one he comes to." - Chase Elliott, finished third "I was trying to get my confidence built up while it was wet and I knew as long as it didn’t rain, it was eventually going
to dry out. So, just didn’t want to hurt my car in the wet and tried to maintain the best I could, which we did. As soon as the lanes started to dry out, we were much better than the people braking. We just had a lot more confidence than the people braking around me and was able to get to second and the pit strategy cycle stuff happened and it kind of messed our race up a little bit. But we were able to rebound to finish fourth. So, a great points day for our team and we needed that. So, had a
lot of fun and congrats to the Trackhouse team. I mean, so much respect to them because that was really cool to watch. Him out my windshield making the moves he was making and taking us all to school. So, he is an extremely amazing race car driver and I hope the rest of the world notices that. Its pretty damn cool. So just a pleasure to get to race with him and battle with him a little bit. I know all of Western Springs Speedway in New Zealand is pretty pumped up right now." - Kyle Larson,
finished fourth "Just slick. Just ice to start. You’re trying to brake as hard as you can, as deep as you can, into these turn; but yet as soft as you can so you don’t lock up tires. That was my issue there getting into turn 6 – I just overstepped it a little bit and got the rears locked up. Just could never get it back under control the whole way in. Just was
sliding. "Hate it for my guys that we got back behind there, but again, we had a good car that was able to get us good track position to get a good day out of it." - Kyle Busch, finished fifth "What a wild race –
starting in a decent amount of rain and then drying out. Even when it was dry though, there were wet spots which is pretty crazy. Unfortunately, with the race being shortened, our strategy didn’t play out like we wanted. So, we ended up restarting like 18th there. Happy to pass a lot of cars to get back there, but we just didn’t quite have enough to get to the front. "I think that the weekend was such a great opportunity to put on a really good show and I’m glad we got the race in. We all fought hard." - Michael McDowell, finished seventh "It was really good. I felt like we had a really fast Interstate Batteries Toyota Camry. I think we had a really good points day. We got in the fence there a
little bit from [Joey Logano] and hurt the right rear a lot so I couldn’t really make a charge back up front. I feel like we could maybe have had a top five day. It was good to finish ninth, so we’ll just keep going." - Ty Gibbs, finished ninth "Unfortunate ending to an exciting day. Road racing has never come easy to me, but the work and effort has
started to show up. Proud of the fight today by the No. 3 Get Bioethanol Chevy team. As far as clipping the wall, I knew it would be an issue. I even talked about coming to this place knowing you can’t peak out to get more air. In this instance, I didn’t feel like I peaked out, just had my car setup for an early apex, it was turning and just caught the wall. Thankful for our partners at Get Bioethanol. We had the green machine rolling pretty good. We will keep fighting." - Austin Dillon,
finished 36th (Crashed out) Phil Allaway is the Frontstretch newsletter manager. He can be reached at phil.allaway@frontstretch.com. Photo is courtesy of Nigel Kinrade Photography.
