Around the World in Motorsports: Oct. 6-8 |
- In Australia Sunday, Triple Eight Race Engineering's Shane van Gisbergen, in what is likely one of his last races at Bathurst due to his move to NASCAR in 2024, won the Repco Supercars Championship Repco Bathurst 1000 with teammate Richie Stanaway. It is van Gisbergen's third Bathurst win, while Stanaway took his first triumph. Van Gisbergen and Stanaway's margin of victory was 19.932 seconds over Erebus Motorsport's Brodie Kostecki (the current points leader) and David Russell. Dick Johnson Racing's Anton de Pasquale and Tony d'Alberto were third, followed by Walkinshaw Andretti United's Chaz Mostert and Lee Holdsworth. Penrite Racing's David Reynolds and Garth Tander finished fifth despite a penalty that put them at the back early on. - The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series spent the weekend at Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, Penn. for the Nittany Showdown. Friday saw Tyler Courtney start fourth and pass James McFadden for the lead on lap 12. From there, Courtney drove away from
McFadden to claim his first World of Outlaws victory in two years. He won by 3.348 seconds over David Gravel. McFadden finished third, then Logan Schuchart and Pennsylvania Posse member Lance Dewease. Saturday night saw Zeb Wise, who won the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions title in the rescheduled Tuscarora 50 Thursday night at Port Royal, earn the pole for the feature
by winning the dash. Wise ended up losing the lead on the first lap to Dewease, then stalked the veteran for the entire first half of the race before retaking the advantage on lap 19. From there, Wise held off Courtney to take his first career World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series win. Wise won by .687 seconds over Courtney. Schuchart was third, then Gravel and Dewease. With four races remaining before the World Finals, Brad Sweet has a 68-point lead over Gravel. Carson Macedo is third, then GIovanni Scelzi and Schuchart. - In World of Outlaws CASE Construction Late Model Series action, Bobby Pierce had an excellent weekend. The "Smooth Operator" took the lead Friday night at Brownstown Speedway on lap 8 and drove away to take the win by 1.755 seconds over Chris Madden. Tyler Erb was third, then Gordy Gundaker and Adam Stricker. In Saturday night's FALS Frenzy at Fairbury Speedway, Pierce battled hard with Madden and Brian Shirley over the first 15 laps of the race before Pierce was able to seize control. From there, Pierce was able to hold on for the weekend sweep and his 14th victory of the year. Pierce won by 1.131 seconds over Nick Hoffman. Madden was
third, then Brandon Sheppard and Kyle Bronson. With only two races remaining before the World Finals, Pierce has expanded his points lead to 156 points over Madden. Sheppard is third, then Bronson and Ryan Gustin. - Rain has plagued Super DIRT Week at
Oswego Speedway. Precipitation wiped out a significant portion of Friday's schedule, then the weather forecast resulted in DIRTcar trying to consolidate the four main features onto Saturday.

Seeking the NASCAR Cup Series Championship: William Byron Wins Round of 12 by Phil Allaway
William Byron had a quiet day Sunday in Charlotte, but in the closing laps, he was right up front, battling for the win. A second-place finish means that he wins the Round of 12. His margin was a healthy 54 points over both Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell. Hamlin ran decently Sunday, but spun out in the
frontstretch chicane was hit, breaking a toe link and ending his day. Bell finished 15th, but scored 15 stage points. Chris Buescher is up one place to fourth after finishing seventh. Tyler Reddick moved up four places to fifth after winning stage one, finishing sixth and scoring a race-high 17 stage points. Ryan
Blaney and Kyle Larson are tied for sixth (Blaney gets the tiebreaker by virtue of his Talladega win). Blaney finished 12th after running much of the race slightly off the pit sequence. Larson came from the rear in a backup car to finish 13th. Martin Truex Jr. finished 20th and dropped two places to eighth. He is the final driver in the Round of 8 on points. Truex ended up 12 points ahead of Ross Chastain, who finished 10th, but lost significant time when he nearly hit Austin Dillon while trying to get into his pit. Bubba Wallace got spun out late and failed to serve his penalty quick enough. After dropping to 31st, he drove back to 16th, but that kept him in 10th. Brad Keselowski's day was ruined by a course-cutting
drive-through penalty that dropped him back to 11th in points. Kyle Busch finished third Sunday, but that wasn't enough to get him out of 12th. When the Round of 8 starts in Las Vegas next weekend, Byron will have a five-point lead over Truex, who continues to benefit from the regular season. Hamlin is third, then Larson and
Buescher. Of those eliminated, Keselowski leads that group in ninth by 20 points over Chastain. Wallace is 11th, then Busch. Joey Logano is 13th, then Kevin Harvick, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Michael McDowell. Outside of the playoffs altogether, Chase Elliott finished ninth and has a 62-point lead over Ty Gibbs, who finished fourth. Daniel Suarez crashed late in the race after contact from Bell and finished 33rd, dropping to 19th. Alex Bowman is 20th. Seeking the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs: John Hunter Nemechek Wins Round of 12 by Phil Allaway
John Hunter Nemechek's Saturday started out terribly with an oil leak causing him to miss qualifying and start from the rear. He was able to recover to win stage two and finish eighth. That was more than enough for him to win the Round of 12. Nemechek ended the round 35 points ahead of Cole Custer, who moved up one spot with a second-place finish.
Justin Allgaier was eliminated in a late restart crash and dropped back to third. Austin Hill finished ninth and finished the round in fourth. Chandler Smith finished the round in fifth after a 12th-place finish. Sammy Smith is sixth in points, while Sheldon Creed finished 10th Saturday and claimed
the final spot in the Round of 8 on points. He ended up two points ahead of Daniel Hemric, who was just a tenth of a second away from a fifth-place finish and advancement via a tiebreaker. Parker Kligerman finished sixth, just one-thousandth of a second behind Kaz Grala. That kept him in ninth. Sam Mayer's victory
on Saturday boosted him to 10th and locked him into the Round of 8. Josh Berry finished third, but stayed in 11th. Jeb Burton triggered the crash that ultimately took Allgaier out of the race and finished the round in 12th. Outside of the playoffs, Riley Herbst finished fourth Saturday and increased his advantage over
Brandon Jones to 65 points. Jones spun out late and finished 29th. Brett Moffitt never really got going before ignition issues ended his race, leaving him nearly a full race behind Jones in 15th. Letter of the Race: Sunday's Bank of America ROVAL 400 was brought to you by the letter Q for Questionable. One of the rule changes made for the race weekend meant that drivers had to traverse the frontstretch chicane
on starts and restarts. The idea was to cut down on chaos in turn 1. The NASCAR Cup Series race was clean there this year, but it is debatable whether it was necessary since it wasn't an issue last year. - Phil Allaway |
Quotes to Remember: Bank of America ROVAL 400k by Phil Allaway
"This is why you do it. This is the only reason you do it. You fight. All the blood, sweat, tears, everybody at Kaulig Racing has just been such – I wouldn’t say a down year, but an up-and-down year. It's our second year in the Cup Series. "...You don't know when you're going
to do it again. I love all the men and women at Kaulig Racing so much. First of all, hi to my beautiful wife and my new baby boy. I usually give these checkered flags away but I'm going to have to wrap this around Aero. My mom and dad, all my family and friends - those people see how much anguish and how much I put it on my shoulders when we're struggling. It just means the world." - AJ Allmendinger, race winner "[I needed] just one final run to get within a car-length there. The air buffer is kind of tough there with three to four car lengths. But once you get within one, you can kind of manipulate his car a little bit, so I was hoping for that. It's been a great year for the No. 24 HP Chevy team and we’ve been great on all the road courses. I had that one shot with probably eight laps to go. AJ [Allmendinger] just did
a good job blocking the chicane there. He didn’t miss his marks and it was too early to make a dive bomb to him. "Just proud of the whole team. The Z by HP Camaro was awesome. We definitely improved a lot as the race went on. It was good to have Z by HP on the car – a new partner for us, so that was really fun. Just good momentum. We’ve got to keep it rolling. I’d like to finish
one-two-two in the next round, too. That would be ideal, but we just have to keep performing like this and we’ll be where we want to be." - William Byron, finished second "Just [needed] more overall grip [to win]. Those last couple of restarts, we were just fighting with traction up off the corners and with front-turn to be able to turn into the corners.
We gave it a valiant effort. That was about what we thought we would get out of here, at least what I thought. We wanted to come in here and win. This team is capable of running and they gave me a great car today. The Lenovo Camaro was fast. We had good speed in it, just wasn’t able to hold on with the tires as long as I wanted to. We’ll take that. It rides on my shoulders anyway with the previous two weeks – not getting anything out of Texas (Motor Speedway) and not getting a whole lot out of
Talladega [Superspeedway]. Just bad circumstances, but we’ll fight on another day." - Kyle Busch, finished third "It was a really good day for the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing team. I need to be a little bit better and do a better job there towards the end. We made a couple adjustments on the car throughout the race, but overall, I just need to do a better job
and capitalize on the restarts and finish it off at the end." - Ty Gibbs, finished fourth "We executed a decent race for the most part. We could have gotten maybe a couple more on being a little quicker on some other things, but, overall, we had the speed to win if you would have put us first but I’m pretty sure anybody in the top seven would
say the same thing. It was whoever was out front goes there. We ran fifth most of the day and we finished fifth and that’s just what it is." - Joey Logano, finished fifth "We executed for sure all day long. Selfishly, I wanted to go forward and win the race on top of it all. We were good, but I feel like we were just one of the other cars there at the very end unfortunately. It’s
hard to take any unnecessary risks when you’re in a good spot to advance to the Round of 8. It just doesn’t make sense to put it all on the line to try to win a race." - Tyler Reddick, finished sixth "That was probably a little bit more stressful from on top of the box than what it was inside the race car. We basically did what we talked
about doing, steadily moving up all day and being there to capture those end of day points. I sure would have loved some stage points, but at the same time didn’t want to throw away the race and it ended up being a great call from Scott and everyone on this No. 17 team. We had another fast race car. This Fifth Third Bank Mustang was good and I’m proud of that. I should have been able to run a little bit better than that, but certainly had to keep the big picture in
mind. Another top 10 for the road courses, just got to break forward a handful of spots, but that’s a heck of a way to go onto the next round." - Chris Buescher, finished seventh "We knew coming in that it was going to be tough. We put together a heck of a day for us on road courses this year in this No. 1 Worldwide Express Chevy. Lately, we’ve just been lacking speed and I
can’t get over the curbs. There’s a lot of reasons. We’ve reverted on some of that through Watkins Glen (International) and to here (Charlotte Motor Speedway Road Course) and it’s really paid off. I’m excited with the gains we’ve made. We came out of the box super strong in 2022 – won the first road course race in the Next Gen car. And then it just slowly kind of stepped back all the way until mid-season this year. "I can’t wait to get to work in the morning, to Las Vegas (Motor Speedway) and every race after that." - Ross Chastain, finished 10th "Texas. That’s what I thought about after we got spun there. This weekend was incredible. Just from the effort from the team and from myself. Just all clicking, right? And it felt really good to be competitive and run
upfront, pass cars on road courses and not be passed. There’s a lot to look at. What I analyze is what could I have done and not be in that situation? Could I have been faster and passed another car? How to be better to not put yourself — when you’re racing around there with squirrels. It is what it is. Just didn’t have enough and it wasn’t in the cards. I guess that’s what 30 is. I’m not mad. I’m happy for the team. I’m pumped for our season. It’s not over yet. I’m really excited for next week
and Homestead and Martinsville. Phoenix, eh, I might just go on vacation (laughter). But we’ve still got four races to go out and do it. I’m proud of the team so I appreciate them." - Bubba Wallace, finished 16th "It’s not the day we wanted for sure, but we’ve got a lot to be proud of. We kept clawing and it just wasn’t enough today. I
felt like I could have done a few things better and obviously it’s frustrating when you don’t advance and you don’t get what you want out of the day, but we’ve got a lot of great things going on and we’ll learn from it and come back stronger." - Brad Keselowski, finished 18th "Just once we got back there it’s just so hard to pass. Overdrove a corner that was
about it, really. Thanks to the whole Mavis team for giving me a solid car we qualified with. Obviously, with the scenarios going on it’s like if you stay out for a stage, you just go back to the back and you’re never to be seen again. Unless, maybe, unless you’re Tyler Reddick. He’s going to the front." - Denny Hamlin, finished 37th (Crashed out) Phil
