Around the World in Motorsports: Oct. 12-15 |
- At Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta Thursday, Bijoy Garg won IMSA VP Racing SportsCar Challenge Race No. 1 under controversial circumstances. With a little more than two minutes remaining, Garg was battling for the lead with Jagger Jones when the duo approached Brady Behrman in the Van der Steur Racing Aston Martin. Jones sideswiped Behrman and put him in the wall. While Jones was given an avoidance contact penalty, Garg was given a grid
penalty for Race No. 2. Behrman was done for the weekend. Race No. 2 on Friday saw Jones lead from pole (which was not taken away due to the aforementioned crash) until the closing laps. Engine issues cost him a 14-second lead with two laps to go, giving the lead to Dan Goldburg. Goldburg all but had the race won, but had contact in turn 6 with Jon Brownson and spun out on the final lap. He recovered, but that was enough for Garg to make up 12 seconds and take the weekend sweep and the LMP3 class title. In GSX, Kelly-Moss Road & Race's Sebastian Carazo earned a weekend sweep in his Porsche Cayman RS Club Sport. Turner Motorsport's
Francis Selldorff won the GSX championship. Saturday night saw the series race at Lakeside Speedway near Kansas City in the Micro-Lite Harvest Rumble. Here, David Gravel was in position to win, but got held up behind lapped traffic on the final
lap. The lapped traffic was all Donny Schatz needed to get around Gravel and take his third win at Lakeside Speedway. Gravel was second, then Brad Sweet, Giovanni Scelzi and Carson Macedo. With only two races remaining before the World Finals, Sweet has a 66-point lead over
Gravel. Macedo is third, then Scelzi and Logan Schuchart.

Seeking the NASCAR Cup Series Championship: Kyle Larson Snags Lead, Locks into Championship 4 With Las Vegas Win by Phil Allaway
Kyle Larson led a race-high 133 laps and won Sunday's South Point 400. He also won all the stages, giving him a perfect score of 60 points. That locked him into the Championship 4 and moved him from fourth to the points lead. He has a five-point advantage over William Byron, who finished sixth. Denny Hamlin
remains in third after finishing ninth. Martin Truex Jr. had his first top 15 finish of the playoffs Sunday in eighth. He still fell two places to fourth, the last place in the Championship 4 on points. Truex has a three-point lead over teammate Christopher Bell, who finished second. Tyler Reddick has sole
possession of sixth after finishing seventh. Chris Buescher finished 10th, but dropped down to seventh. Ryan Blaney finished sixth on the road, but was disqualified (see above). That kept him in eighth but he is now 56 points behind Truex. He'll likely need to win to make the Championship 4. Of those eliminated from the
playoffs, Brad Keselowski expanded his advantage over Ross Chastain to 25 points after leading laps and finishing fourth. Kyle Busch moved up to 11th after a third-place finish. Bubba Wallace is 12th. Joey Logano is still 13th, followed by Kevin Harvick. Michael
McDowell jumped over Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for 15th. Of those who failed to qualify for the playoffs, Chase Elliott continues to lead that group, but a restart violation on the final restart dropped him to a 31st-place finish. He still has a 51-point lead over Daniel Suarez, but this likely spells
curtains on the No. 9 team making the owners' Championship 4 without a victory. Ty Gibbs lost a wheel Sunday and finished 33rd, dropping him to 19th and possibly costing him some crewmembers. Alex Bowman is 20th. Round of 8 Point Standings: 1) Kyle Larson 4084, 2) William Byron

John Hunter Nemechek had another fluid leak that required him to come from the rear. No problem. He drove up to finish second and expanded his points lead to 26 points over Justin Allgaier. Letter of the Race: Sunday's South Point 400 was brought to you by the letter P for Point of Emphasis. Recently, NASCAR officials have been taking a closer look at laying back on restarts and told drivers that they
were going to start making some calls. Sure enough, they did Sunday. Chase Elliott's day was ruined by one of those calls. - Phil Allaway |
Quotes to Remember: South Point 400 compiled by Phil Allaway
"I could see him coming in my mirror, for sure. Was hoping those lappers were going to give me the bottom. [Todd Gilliland] peeled off to the bottom. I knew I couldn't follow him. I just didn't want to go all the way to the top, leave the middle open. "Thankfully, Christopher [Bell] alw ays races
extremely clean. Could have got crazier than it did coming to the start/finish line. Thank you to him for racing with respect there. "What a job done by my team, too. Just a great race car. I almost gave it away there in one and two, getting sideways, hitting into the wall. Had to fight back there with our balance. They got it much closer there in the lead.
"Thanks to Chevrolet, HendrickCars.com, Valvoline, everybody involved in this deal. This is really cool to get to race in the championship in a few weeks. Glad we don't need to stress in the last two races." - Kyle Larson, race winner "I don’t know what else I could have done, so I don’t
know. I feel like that was my moment. That was my moment to make the Final Four. Didn’t quite capture it. I don’t know. Coming to the checkered there, I knew that he was going to be blocking, so I’m like, I’m going to try to go high. He went high. I don’t even know if I had a run to get by him there coming to the line. Just wasn’t enough. A great day, great day for sure to get the stage points, get a second-place finish out of it. I think I saw we’re minus two, so we’re not out of it by any
means. It would have been nice to lock it in." - Christopher Bell, finished second "It was a really good day, a solid day, for the No. 8 Morgan & Morgan Chevy team. Really appreciate Randall [Burnett] and all the guys giving me a great piece when we unloaded here. We qualified up front and ran top 10 all day. Our weak spots are just restarts. I just get into bad spots and lose spots at
times and can’t get my way forward, like a couple of other guys can do a better job at doing that. But overall, just really pleased with the day. We made adjustments all day long. We rallied forward all day and there at the end, we were really good." - Kyle Busch, finished third "We just executed really well on pit road, with strategy and on restarts. We executed really well, but I feel like we needed a
touch more speed and a few breaks to go our way to be able to win. Kyle was just a little faster. If we were in front of him, I think we might have been able to hold him off, but he was just really fast." - Brad Keselowski, finished fourth "It feels good to be competitive – just be able to drive by cars. We were just a couple of adjustments away and we got it there late
in Stage Two. We drove from 12th to second, and from there, just both sides of the balance – too loose for our No. 1 Worldwide Express Chevy, and then too tight there at the end. If we nailed it, balance-wise, I think we had a shot. We had a failure of some sort with something in the driveline or in the gear box. My restarts were definitely down on power in second and third gear, not sure. Once I would get to fourth and fifth (gear), I’d be OK, but you had to get there and I was getting
swallowed up on some of those restarts. "It was a heck of a fight. We had speed early and come back to finish fifth." - Ross Chastain, finished fifth "We definitely need to just work on our build and how we build loose, but our No. 24 Relay Payments Chevrolet was solid. The points are a lot tighter than we would
want them to be, so we just have to have two good weeks, and hopefully go to Homestead (Miami Speedway) and have a little bit better long run speed. But overall, happy with our execution. We kind of made the most out of what we had. I think at the beginning of the race, we were hovering around sixth to eighth, and we were able to finish there. Wish we could have gotten a little more stage points, but we’ll take it." - William Byron, finished sixth "We missed it a little bit on the handling, unfortunately. We were really loose and it kind of boxed us in unfortunately. To get an eighth out of it, that was probably a better finish than we had on pace, so to get that finish is good for us. You look at it – yeah, we lost ground on the cutline, but how our car drove today, it should have been a lot worse than it was. We got something out of it and
kind of minimized the bleeding." - Tyler Reddick, finished seventh "It was just trying to figure out how to minimize the damage and hope that we could get a longer run. We did at the end, which was really helpful. I don’t know what we had going on. Restarting up front, we were pretty good, and then on the long runs, really good – I thought – probably a third-place car, but once we got back there –
16th, 18th whatever it was – it was just really bad on the restart. I would lose three, four, five spots every time and then once we got strung out and got going, I would pick them off and work our way forward, but then we would get another caution and I would lose a couple more. It was an uphill battle, but luckily at the end, we were able to have a couple of better restarts and at least maintain, and then work our way forward from there. All-in-all, it was okay. The pit call obviously killed
us in stage two." - Martin Truex Jr., finished eighth "We got shuffled back a little bit in some dirty air and it was a struggle back there for a little bit. We got back going and needed some longer runs and green flag cycles to sort it out and we didn’t get it that way. We were able to make some decent work out of it and get a pretty decent finish out of the day." -
Chris Buescher, finished 10th "I don’t really know one way or another for sure. We were really tight before that, so I want to say it was a slow leak on the tire or something two laps prior to that. Ally team. We had a really fast Chevrolet Camaro and our teammates have been really fast, as well." - Alex Bowman, finished 35th (Crashed out) Phil Allaway is the Frontstretch newsletter manager.
