Seeking the NASCAR Cup Series Championship: Denny Hamlin Expands Lead After Martin Truex Jr.'s Tire Issue by Phil Allaway
Denny Hamlin had an excellent day in Illinois Sunday and brought home a second-place finish. That allowed him to expand his lead to 21 points. That advantage is over Kyle Larson. Despite crashing with Kyle Busch, Larson recovered to finish 10th. Chase Elliott is up one place to third
after finishing 13th. Martin Truex Jr. got a flat left rear tire and was forced to pit under green. Shortly afterwards, Josh Berry crashed out, trapping Truex two laps down. He finished 34th and dropped two places to fourth. William Byron remains in fifth after a middling run to 15th. Tyler
Reddick finished fourth and stays sixth. Ty Gibbs is still in seventh, while Brad Keselowski and Christopher Bell are now tied for eighth. Keselowski finished third while Bell struggled to finish seventh with an engine going sour. Ross Chastain and Alex

Seeking the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs: Cole Custer Assumes The Lead by Phil Allaway
Chandler Smith ran well Saturday, but he ended up running into the back of another car on a restart with nine laps to go and cooked his engine. The 35th-place finish cost him the points lead. Cole Custer kept himself out of trouble and finished sixth
Saturday. That was enough to give him the points lead. His advantage is 18 points over both Chandler Smith and Austin Hill. Hill finished 11th and gets the tiebreaker. Justin Allgaier remains in fourth after a second-place finish and gained a bunch of ground on his rivals. He has earned 60 stage points and six playoff points in the past three races. Jesse Love finished 19th and stayed in fifth. AJ Allmendinger gained some points, but was likely disappointed with a fourth-place finish that keeps him in sixth. Riley Herbst finished 10th and led 15 laps to stay in seventh. Sheldon Creed ran well early before fading to 13th. He remains in eighth. Parker Kligerman finished eighth and remains in ninth. Sammy Smith is up three places to 10th after finishing third. Ryan Sieg is up three places to 11th after finishing 14th. He is the last driver in the playoffs on points. Sieg is three points ahead of JR Motorsports teammates Sam Mayer and Brandon Jones. Mayer was running up front until he clipped the tire barrier exiting the final turn in the final laps. That cut his left rear tire and dropped Mayer to a 28th-place finish. Jones crashed out late and finished 36th. Shane van Gisbergen moved up one place to 14th after taking his first victory. Anthony Alfredo is down three places to 15th
after an early cut tire dropped him to a 32nd-place finish. Parker Retzlaff moved up to 16th. Point Standings (1-16): 1) Cole Custer 475, t-2) Austin Hill -18, t-2) Chandler Smith -18, 4) Justin Allgaier

Seeking the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Championship: Christian Eckes Stands Pat After Strong Gateway Run by Phil Allaway
Christian Eckes should have lost the points lead Friday night. Corey Heim won the first two stages on-track and finished second on the road. Then, he got disqualified for three or more loose lug nuts. As a result, Eckes' 10th-place finish was enough for him
to expand his lead to 30 points over Heim. Without the DQ, it would have been a 24-point deficit to Heim. Nick Sanchez's second win of the year moved him up one place to third. Sanchez jumped over Ty Majeski, who finished 23rd. Taylor Gray finished 12th and stays in fifth. Rajah Caruth moved up one place to sixth after finishing
16th. Caruth jumped over Tyler Ankrum, who crashed out and finished 32nd. Tanner Gray is up two positions to eighth after finishing 17th, but earning 19 stage points and inheriting a playoff point after Heim's disqualification. Grant Enfinger dropped a spot to ninth despite finishing third due to no stage points. Ben Rhodes is
10th after a fifth-place finish. He is the last driver in the playoffs on points at the moment. Rhodes has a 32-point lead over Stewart Friesen, who finished second Friday night. Matt Crafton dropped to 12th after crashing and finishing 15 laps down in 31st. Daniel Dye is 13th, then Jake Garcia, Chase Purdy and
Bayley Currey. Point Standings (1-16): 1) Christian Eckes 506, 2) Corey Heim -31, 3) Nick Sanchez -53, 4) Ty Majeski -64, 5) Taylor Gray

Letter of the Race: Sunday's Enjoy Illinois 300 presented by TicketSmarter was brought to you by the letter S for Strategy. There were effectively two different strategies at play. One was Christopher Bell's
strategy that involved pitting at the final stage break. The other, led by Team Penske, was not to stop. Only Bell (before his engine turned traitor) could compete with the Penske strategy. - Phil Allaway |
Quotes to Remember: Enjoy Illinois 300 presented by TicketSmarter compiled by Phil Allaway
"This is huge for me. This is huge for this team. I’m so glad I was able to get a win with Brian [Wilson] as my crew chief in the Cup Series. You never know when it’s going to happen again, just drive my butt off and hope for the best. "It’s everything. It’s absolutely
everything. Great to win in front of an amazing crowd. This race track does an amazing job putting on events. Just proud to be able to do it. Proud to bring it home for these guys. They deserve it." - Austin Cindric, race winner "No, definitely not. We had a top-five car – we didn’t have the best today, but the Yahoo Camry was in the mix, and was able to
capitalize on some others' misfortune there. We were going to have a top-five day regardless, but proud of the team. They did a great job on pit road – Chris [Gabehart] and the team brought a great car, just wasn’t quite enough." - Denny Hamlin, finished second "That was strategy. We got behind early for sure but we kept putting ourselves in position to keep moving forward and I wish I could have
gotten second but it was a really hard-fought day for everyone on the Solomon Plumbing Ford Mustang. We will take a lot of good momentum from this one for sure. "It was hot in the [car] there, but it was good for our whole effort. We were in position early and we had the issue there on pit road. The guys kept their heads down and recovered. We had some good strategy and made
some good passes on that last restart to start [the final stage] and on the long run, we were really strong, so just making it all count where we can." - Brad Keselowski, finished third "We [had] a rough first stop there. I slid a little long, and just slowed everyone down on the 45 pit crew. We came in eighth and came out in 28th. It took the entire race to claw back
from that – just a great effort by the guys. I feel like we were right there with [Austin Cindric] to start the race, so obviously, it is a little bit of a bummer that we had that issue, but that is kind of the name of the game when you come to World Wide Technology Raceway – you have to have a clean race, and unfortunately, we didn’t. I’m really glad we were able to get a fourth-place finish out of our SiriusXM Camry." - Tyler Reddick, finished fourth "Man, just thank you to the good lord above. That was a huge run for this team. I didn’t expect it after practice, but the guys made some great adjustments and our No. 3 DOW / Rivers are Life Chevy, with Ducks Unlimited on the side of the car, was really solid all day long, even in traffic. It was just a solid day for the No. 3 Chevy team that we really needed." - Austin Dillon, finished
sixth "I have no idea what happened with our DEWALT Camry – some sort of motor issue, and I’m surprised that it made it to the end. Glad we were able to salvage something out of it – but you don’t get race cars like that very often – whenever you do, you need to take advantage of them, so that is disappointing." - Christopher Bell, finished seventh "This No. 77 Zeigler Auto Group Chevy team did a really good job with everything all race long. We had a really slow stop at the beginning of the race with a lug nut coming off. That really put us behind. We knew we had a great Chevy, so we just did everything we could. We played strategy a little bit to make sure we were on the right end of it. We caught the caution right, but then after that, our
car was really good. We ran as high of fourth and we were catching third. Our lights were off, so we were a little slow down pit road. That was probably the difference of getting a top-five finish or not. All-in-all, it was just a really good job by this No. 77 team." - Carson Hocevar, finished eighth "I’m super proud of this top 10 finish. After the spin, I wasn’t
expecting that. The car kind of came to life. The No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevy team did a good job on our strategy. We were on offense there the last 25 laps or so. "It went as well as it could, given the circumstances. I’ll take it." - Kyle Larson, finished 10th
"No, I didn’t think [we were low on
fuel]. I never thought in my mind we were short. It’s one of those things. I’m proud of the 12 boys. The Menards/Richmond Ford was fast. I had my work cut out for me holding off Christopher [Bell]. That was fun. I don’t know what happened to him, but just one lap short. That stinks, but congrats to the No. 2 team. They did a good job all day. Props to them, Austin. I’m proud for Team Penske and Ford. I’m really happy with our showing today. I don’t know what I’ve got to do to get some luck on
our side. I’ve wrecked the last two points races and thought we had a great shot to win today and I ended up bad, so I just appreciate the effort. We just have to keep sticking with it." - Ryan Blaney, finished 24th "It looked like [Kyle Larson] got loose down the front straightaway into turn 1. He was on older tires and trying to get us for a spot. I’m not sure what
that single point would mean for him, but it certainly hurt us a lot. It took that point away, as well as the others that we would get for the stage and then also the rest of the day. It’s very frustrating. We can’t afford days like that. The No. 8 Rebel Bourbon Camaro wasn’t what it was last year, but it was a top 10 car and we were going to finish there. Now we’re not going to finish at all." - Kyle Busch, finished 35th (Crashed out) Phil Allaway is the Frontstretch newsletter manager. He can be reached at phil.allaway@frontstretch.com.
