Around the World in Motorsports: Aug. 15 |
- Dirt late model racer Scott Bloomqvist died this morning
in a plane crash near his home in Mooresburg, Tenn. Details are extremely scarce at the moment, but it appears that Bloomqvist was flying his plane around his farm when the plane went down and crashed into a barn. Bloomqvist is considered to be a legend in dirt late model racing. He is a three-time champion of the
Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, a four-time champion of the defunct Hav-A-Tampa series and the 2014 champion of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. A 2002 inductee in the National Dirt Racing Hall of Fame, Bloomqvist raced late models for more than 35 years. We at Frontstretch send our condolences to the Bloomqvist family. - Kyle Larson's sweep through sprint car racing continued Thursday night at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif. Larson was able to get past his own brother-in-law (Brad Sweet) to take the lead with nine laps to go. From there, Larson held on to win the Thursday Night Thunderbowl for his fourth High Limit win of the year. He also took home a check for $25,000. Rico Abreu was second, then Sweet and James McFadden. Cole Macedo was fifth. In the points, Sweet holds a 103-point lead over Tyler Courtney. Brent Marks is third, then Abreu and Corey Day.

Frontstretch Folio: FireKeepers Casino 400 by Phil Allaway
This weekend, the
NASCAR Cup Series will return to Michigan International Speedway in the Irish Hills of Michigan for their only visit of the season. Coverage of the FireKeepers Casino 400 will begin with Countdown to Green at 2
p.m. ET on USA Network. Race coverage is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. ET with the green flag being displayed around 2:40 p.m. ET. Records and facts Last year's FireKeepers Casino 400 was stopped after 74 laps due to rain. The race resumed Monday afternoon under cloudy skies. The race was competitive with 26 lead changes. Chris Buescher rose to the front late in the race and took the lead away from Martin Truex Jr. with 12 laps to go. From there, Buescher held on to take the victory by just .152 seconds over
Truex. Denny Hamlin was third, then Brad Keselowski and Kyle Larson. Among active drivers, Larson and Joey Logano have the most victories at Michigan with three each. Hamlin has two victories, while three others have a single win. All-time, David Pearson is the winningest driver at Michigan with nine career victories, including three in a row at one point. His first Michigan win came in the Yankee 600, an attempt to
run a 600-mile race at Michigan. It ended up being rain-shortened to 165 laps of the scheduled 300. Cale Yarborough is second all-time at MIS with eight wins, followed by Bill Elliott with seven. Kevin Harvick is fourth with his six, while Mark Martin and Rusty Wallace have five victories apiece. Track Facts Track / Race

Saturday, Aug. 17, 1:30 p.m. ET on USA Network "Michigan is the fastest track we go to. It’s really hard to hold your foot down going into turn one. Your brain is telling you that you need to start lifting, but usually the car can take a bit more. It’s super, super fast and the commitment level is very high. And the groove is not really wide, which is different than, say, Fontana, where you can go really fast but the groove is very wide.
You miss it by a few inches there you will be OK. At Michigan, not so much, especially when the traction compound is live, it’s very sketchy and on edge. We’ve been very consistent there in my time with JGR, but James (Small, crew chief) and the guys have been bringing fast cars. Hoping Michigan is another place we add to the win list this weekend with our Auto-Owners Insurance Camry. Really would love to get Auto-Owners a win at their home track. They’ll have a lot of people at the track
cheering us on Sunday and hope we can make them proud." - Martin Truex Jr. "There are some unknowns going into Michigan because we only go there once a year. I’ve been there virtually this week with the simulator and we see a lot of speed. This is our third trip there with this car and last year we led some laps there early and were in the mix so we hope that we take more steps forward. We’ve had
two at-bats at Michigan with this version of the car and we hope to continue to make our cars faster. "We are always evolving. A lot will depend on the weather. The cooler the temperatures, the more on throttle time we will have and high speeds. We basically want to end the race almost out of fuel and tires about as old as you can stand and still compete for the win. When you lose grip at Michigan there’s no catching it. There’s no sliding – it’s either all grip and going fast or sliding
somewhere you don’t want to be." - Ross Chastain "I
think you can take a little bit from those races, but Michigan is kind of different than all the other ones. It’s not got a lot of tire falloff, it’s extremely fast, it’s smoother through the corners, and the banking and things are different, so Michigan is kind of its own racetrack that stands out among the rest. You can apply some of the stuff you’ve learned at mile-and-a-half racetracks from an aero standpoint, but when you go to Michigan, all that stuff is amplified, so you’ve got to be
really on your game from an aero standpoint and an engine standpoint. It has been a while since we’ve run a mile-and-a-half-style track. I feel like it’s always a fresh reset when we get to Michigan and try to figure out who’s going to be good." - Chase
