Seeking the NASCAR Cup Series Championship: Ryan Blaney Expands Lead With Late Charge by Phil Allaway
Ryan Blaney spun on lap 234 and dropped to the back Sunday. He then took on tires and used the fresh rubber to get back to a fourth-place finish. That allowed him to not only keep his points lead, but expand it. Blaney's lead is now 12 points over William Byron, who crashed racing for the lead on lap 258 with Austin Cindric and ended up in 27th. Tyler Reddick was caught up in the last-lap wreck and finished 19th. Despite that, he still moved up to third. Cindric was unable to continue after his crash and dropped to fourth after finishing 28th. Bubba Wallace tied for the most points scored Sunday (44) and moved up 16 spots to fifth after finishing ninth. Wallace tied points-wise for the day with Kyle Larson, who finished third. Larson is up 18 places to tie for sixth with John Hunter Nemechek and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Stenhouse finished fifth, while Nemechek was 10th. Alex Bowman is down four places to ninth after crashing with Chris Buescher. Bowman ended up 26th. Chase Elliott stays in 10th despite crashing and finishing 20th. Joey Logano is up five spots to 11th after leading the most laps and finishing 12th. Christopher Bell's victory moved him up 14
positions to 12th. Denny Hamlin and Michael McDowell are tied for 13th. Hamlin finished sixth, while McDowell actually went to the garage to change a power steering belt, then made up six laps to finish 13th. Carson Hocevar's second-place finish moved him up to 15th, while Buescher's crash dropped him to
16th. Buescher is the last driver in the playoffs on points at the moment. He is one point ahead of Erik Jones, who crashed early on and finished 26 laps down in 31st. Seeking the NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoffs: Austin Hill Snags Lead With Dominant Run by Phil Allaway
Jesse Love won the pole for Saturday's race and led 13 laps. However, he could do nothing with teammate Austin Hill. Hill led 146 of 163 laps and scored a perfect 60 points in his victory. That was enough to boost him all the way up from a tie for 16th to the points lead. Hill has a one-point lead over Sheldon Creed, who finished 14th after running strongly. Love is down to third after a 16th-place finish. Justin Allgaier is up five places to fourth after finishing second. Jeb Burton avoided catastrophe in the opening
laps to finish sixth and move up to fifth in points. Jeremy Clements avoided significant damage when he spun exiting turn 2 and finished 11th. That performance moved him up four places to seventh. Sam Mayer and Carson Kvapil are tied for eighth. Mayer scored 17 stage points, but crashed out late. Kvapil was involved in a last-lap crash and finished 23rd. Matt DiBenedetto finished 12th and moved up four places to 10th in his Viking Motorsports Chevrolet. Sammy Smith and Leland Honeyman are tied for 11th. Smith was fourth, while Honeyman finished eighth. They are the last two drivers in the playoffs on points, although Honeyman is likely not going to race at Circuit of the Americas next weekend. Honeyman and Smith are five points ahead of Taylor Gray, who dropped nine spots after crashing out in the same incident where Clements spun. Seeking the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Playoffs: Grant Enfinger Snags Points Lead With Strong Run by Phil Allaway
Corey Heim had a great run early on Saturday. However, a gamble on getting to the end of stage two on fuel did not pay off. He ran out of fuel, then had trouble restarting. He would ultimately finish three laps down in 23rd. Grant Enfinger finished 10th Saturday,
but scored 17 stage points. That was enough to give him the points lead. He is one point ahead of Ty Majeski, who finished eighth. Chandler Smith came from the rear to finish fifth in order to stay in third. Heim's issues dropped him down to fourth. Ben Rhodes is up to fifth after a seventh-place finish. Gio Ruggiero stays in a
tie for sixth, but it's now with Stewart Friesen and Daniel Hemric. Friesen just missed out on victory in second, while Ruggiero was 11th and Hemric 16th. Jake Garcia is up three places to ninth after a ninth-place finish. Jack Wood won stage one and used those points to move up 10 spots to 10th. He is the last driver in the
playoffs on points at the moment. Wood is one point ahead of Bayley Currey, who moved up 11 places after finishing fourth. Tanner Gray is up four places to 12th, then Layne Riggs and Tyler Ankrum. Kaden Honeycutt is 15th, while teammates Frankie Muniz and Josh Reaume are tied for
16th. Point Standings (1-16): 1) Grant Enfinger 85, 2) Ty Majeski -1, 3) Chandler Smith -6, 4) Corey Heim -16, 5) Ben Rhodes -19, t-6) Gio Ruggiero -23, t-6) Stewart Friesen

Letter of the Race: Sunday's Ambetter Health 400 was brought to you by the Letter H for Handling. Despite the race being run on some of the hardest tires that will be used all year on a 1.5-mile oval, the tire wore
enough that handling actually played a role for much of the race...until the sun set. Perhaps the race could be more representative if it started earlier, or ran later in the year. - Phil Allaway |
Quotes to Remember: Ambetter Health 400 compiled by Phil Allaway
"I definitely wasn’t going to start a burnout till they told me for sure that I won. I felt like I had it because I was gauging off the guys besides me – whenever I saw the yellow flag. I don’t know – for the last lap or so, I kept seeing smoke in my rear-view mirror, and I was like, oh my gosh, please don’t crash, please don’t crash. This place is just bonkers. Every time we
come here, it gets wilder and wilder, and I never in my wildest dreams would have thought I would have won a superspeedway race." - Christopher Bell, race winner "First off, apologies to [Kyle] Larson, [Hendrick Motorsports], Mr. H and everybody. They help us out a lot and I didn’t realize we weren’t racing back to the line. The last two nights
were kind of that way, and I hit [Christopher Bell] to get him out of the way and filled the middle. A little bit longer and maybe we win the race. But big thanks to Spire Motorsports, Chevrolet and Delaware Life. I normally ride in the back and run last, so I was just trying to get a good, decent finish. For how bad we were at Daytona, I was not riding. But yeah, there is some stuff I have to learn and clean up a little bit, but I feel like we put ourselves in the perfect
opportunity to win the race. I have never had that opportunity really before, especially on a big superspeedway. So just big thanks to Spire Motorsports. They deserve all the praise, and I just get to hold the wheel, run wide open and try to put myself in a decent spot. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the best spot but was just one spot short." - Carson Hocevar, finished second "I think if I didn’t let [Christopher Bell] get to my outside, I would have had an opportunity, but he would probably split to my inside into [turn 1] and clear me. If I don’t hesitate, the wreck probably doesn’t happen. So yeah, I don’t know.. I haven’t seen a replay yet. But yeah, bummer not to get a win. I’m proud of the effort today by this No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevy team. We had a lot of fun. It was super intense. It was my first legit finish
here at Atlanta Motor Speedway since the reconfiguration, so I’ll take it. I feel like we learned a lot and I feel like we can be a lot better with the balance of our racecar to be a little bit more on offense while we are in traffic. We just came up a little bit short. Congratulations to Bell. Thank you to HendrickCars.com, Chevrolet and all the Chevy partner teams, too. It’s been a good night, just wish we could have been a couple spots better." - Kyle Larson, finished
third "It was a little bit of a struggle getting to the front after I lost some track position in the first and second stage, and then we got spun when I finally got track position by the 77 and we were able to make it back up and run forward, so it was an up and down day, that’s for sure. I’m happy we were able to make a recovery." -
Ryan Blaney, finished fourth "It was a better finish than I thought we were going to get tonight. There were a lot of crashed cars there too, so we kind of cycled our way forward a little bit with some guys that wrecked out. Overall, the No. 8 Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen Chevy had really good speed, I just had a really hard time opening it up. When I got back in
traffic, worse than third in line, I just really had to lift out of the throttle a lot and that was holding me up and holding my lane up. Not a lot of guys were willing to deal with that and have the patience for that, so it kind of shucked us back there a few times. But we were able to rally and get what we could for our Cheddar’s Chevrolet. Just wish we were closer to the front for the end, but that’s where all the wrecks were happening too, so maybe not." - Kyle Busch, finished
seventh "To qualify 33rd and drive through the field – I made some bad decisions throughout the race. The car was good enough in traffic to keep cycling forward. Great call by Phil Surgen there at the beginning of the final stage to come and get four tires. I was definitely second guessing that in the moment, but it was definitely the right
call. So I am glad he is the one making the calls on the No. 1 Moose Chevrolet." - Ross Chastain, finished eighth "That was an eventful day for the No. 71 Group 1001 Chevy team. We had an issue early on with the power steering pump. We actually lost the hose; came in the garage and went down seven laps. We got all of our laps back, nothing short of
miraculous, and capitalized there at the end. So thankful to get a good finish, given that it could have been a disaster there. Really proud of Carson (Hocevar). He had a great race. I didn’t see the ending of it, but I know he was up front racing for the win all night long. Really proud of Spire Motorsports for bringing fast Chevy’s. We got some good notes for us for when we come back here. I’m proud of my team and their effort – just grinding through it, getting laps back, fixing a mechanical
issue and never giving up. That’s what it’s all about." - Michael McDowell, finished 13th "We had a really fast car. We saw yesterday that all of our cars were fast. We were able to stay aggressive, stay on the offense, stay up front. I feel that I am in a situation now where I can succeed. We tried to make the most of it there, but we obviously didn’t get the finish that we
deserved. It was just crazy. Honestly, it was a lot of fun, but it was just crazy. A lot of aggressive moves racing there at the end. [Carson Hocevar] threw [Ross Chastain] out of line and I kind of pushed him through the middle and then we just got squeezed together once into [turn 1] and then again off of [turn 2]. We all just ran out of room there. It’s just disappointing. I have to go back and look to see if there is something I could have done better. I mean, what’s the use of wrecking for
eighth or whatever? I hate that we didn’t get the finish we deserved." - Josh Berry, finished 25th
"It was unfortunate. As a team, as Fords, we had the best cars here this weekend. We put ourselves into position to win the race and got used up and into the fence and didn’t win the race. It’s a shame. Two weeks in a row I feel like we have had the
car to beat and haven’t done it. One way or another it is disappointing." - Austin Cindric, finished 28th (Crashed out) Phil Allaway is the Frontstretch newsletter manager. He can be reached at phil.allaway@frontstretch.com. Photo is courtesy of Nigel Kinrade Photography.
