Around the World in Motorsports: March 14-16 |
- The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series spent last weekend at Kennedale Speedway Park in Texas for the Cowtown Classic. It was an interesting weekend. Friday night saw Giovanni Scelzi start from the pole and spend the entire 25-lap feature dueling with David
Gravel. Gravel tried his hardest to get past, but he could not get past the young Scelzi, who took his first win of the year. Scelzi won by .388 seconds over Gravel. Carson Macedo was third, then Sheldon Haudenschild and Bill Balog. Saturday night saw
Sam Hapertepe Jr. start from the pole and lead early. However, Buddy Kofoid was able to run him down and start battling for the lead. On lap 10, Kofoid swept past with a slide job. However, Hafertepe Jr. raced Kofoid hard for the remainder of the 30-lap feature through traffic. Through all that, Kofoid was able to hold on for the win. The margin of victory was 1.053 seconds over Hafertepe Jr. Scelzi was
third, then Logan Schuchart and Gravel.
Through 10 races, Gravel continues to lead by 62 points over Schuchart. Macedo is third, followed by Kofoid and Haudenschild. - The Kubota High Limit Sprint Car Series started their 2025 season this past weekend
at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Thursday night's show, which was postponed after time trials to Friday night, ended up being cancelled due to rain. Saturday night seemed like it was going to be Daryn Pittman's night. The Kreitz Racing driver dominated the proceedings from the pole. Then, he ran out of fuel on lap 24. Pittman's issues gave the lead to Corey Day. He made up for a disappointing season debut in the
NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series by leading the remaining seven laps to take the win and $25,000. Day won by .632 seconds over Kyle Larson. Brad Sweet was third, followed by Tyler Courtney and Brady Bacon. - The World of Outlaws Late Model Series was at
Smoky Mountain Speedway for the Tennessee Tipoff. Here, Bobby Pierce dominated the show, leading flag-to-flag to take the win Friday night. Pierce won by .452 seconds over Jonathan Davenport. Nick Hoffman finished third, then Dale McDowell and Devin Moran. Saturday night's second night of action in Tennessee was cancelled due to rain. It will not be made up. Through six races, Pierce leads the points by 12 over Hoffman. Ricky Thornton Jr. is third, then Ryan Gustin and Max Blair.

Seeking the NASCAR Cup Series Championship: William Byron Extends Lead After Rivals Falter by Phil Allaway
William Byron was the best of those who stopped on the final caution for fuel Sunday. He was able to get back to fourth by the checkered flag. That was enough to extend his lead when a number of the top drivers in points entering the day had issues. Byron's lead is now 29 points over Christopher Bell, who had an issue on pit road that dropped him to the back of the lead lap, then charged to finish 12th. Tyler Reddick and Chase Elliott are tied for third. Reddick pitted under green and got burned by the final caution while Elliott finished 10th. Alex Bowman is up one place to fifth after finishing seventh. Kyle Larson led the most laps, but got stuck in traffic and finished ninth. Despite that, he still moved up five spots to sixth. Ryan Blaney crashed out after driving up from the rear. He's down three places to seventh. Joey Logano dropped to eighth after finishing 15th. Chris Buescher is up one position to ninth after a 13th-place finish. Ross Chastain finished fifth and moved up six positions to 10th. Bubba Wallace had a great car, but got caught up in a late crash. He finished 28th, but still moved up to 11th due to stage points. Denny Hamlin is down five spots to 12th
after getting caught a lap down by a caution like Reddick. Josh Berry's first career victory moved him up eight places to 13th and locked him into the playoffs. Michael McDowell started from pole and struggled. He managed to finish 14th and gain sole possession of 14th. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and John
Hunter Nemechek are tied for 14th. Stenhouse finished 18th while Nemechek was 20th. Stenhouse and Nemechek are the last two drivers in the playoff on points. They have a two-point advantage over Kyle Busch, who lost a wheel and crashed on lap 113. He would eventually finish 33rd. Ryan Preece tied his career-best with a

Letter of the Race: Sunday's Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube was brought to you by the letter L for Loose Wheels. Sunday had had some of the most prolific wheel issues in recent weeks. Two separate
teams lost wheels during the race (and will have to deal with suspensions later this week). Christopher Bell almost did as well, but pulled into his teammate's pit to get it taken care of. We'll see if NASCAR makes a regulation change in response to that. - Phil Allaway |
Quotes to Remember: Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube compiled by Phil Allaway
"Man, I just can’t believe it. I’m just so proud of everybody on this team. The car was really solid all day. We just executed. We had a mishap on pit road and was able to rebound again, and I’m just super proud of these guys. I’m just really trying to soak this all in, honestly. I’m trying to take my time
with everything and really enjoy this moment. "I’m just really proud of everybody on this team. This is a great group. They build great race cars and it’s just been a privilege to drive for them. I’m just so really thankful to be here. There are so many people I could thank for this moment, but to be a Cup Series winner
is really special." - Josh Berry, race winner "Definitely a little disappointed, but first of all, congratulations to Josh Berry and the No. 21 team. They did a great job and they’ve been fast. The No. 99 Freeway Insurance Chevy team did everything right. The pit crew did an amazing job with the pit stops. We did everything
right with the strategy. Our Chevy was fast, but we just struggled a little bit on the short runs. I mentioned to my crew chief – before the last run, I told him that if we’re going to be up front, we’re going to need a better car for the short run. I was having too much contact over there in (turns) one and two. Unfortunately, I think that’s why we lost the race. We just had a little bit too much contact. I almost wrecked in [turns] one and two. "But overall, just very, very proud of everyone at Trackhouse Racing. The entire organization has been working very hard and it’s showing. Thank you to Chevrolet, Freeway Insurance, Coca-Cola, Quaker State – all of our partners that help us to get to the
track every weekend. It was a solid effort." - Daniel Suarez, finished second "Going into the season the motto is live by the fire, die by the fire and take chances, be aggressive, be on the offense and just put us in position. Man, I’m happy for Josh. I really liked him when we were teammates and I’m just super
proud of everybody on this Consumer Cellular Ford Mustang Dark Horse. I just can’t thank Jack Roush, Brad Keselowski, Kroger, Mohawk Northeast, Fifth Third Bank and the list goes on and one – Build Submarines, Castrol, for the opportunity. I’ve been told I’m mid very often by people and I’m glad I feel Josh said he felt like himself again and I felt the same today." - Ryan Preece, finished third "When everything got flipped with the fuel strategy – not really pit strategy, but you had to pit to make it to the end of the race. Everything just got flipped around and we were on the bad side of that, having to restart in the 20s and then have to drive back through the field. I thought we did a good job getting back through the field. Our car was a lot tighter in traffic. There’s definitely some things for us to
improve and work on because I feel like once we lost the first couple of rows, it was a completely different race car. We just have to continue to improve on that. "Overall, happy with the result for the No. 24 Raptor Chevrolet team. We
had a good car. We definitely had one of the best cars, if the race would have played out normally. We just didn’t really have a chance to get back up there at the end." - William Byron, finished fourth "Yeah, [my bump] got [Daniel Suarez] clear to the lead. I was fully committed to him and happy to do it. Got him a good
push down the frontstretch and through the restart zone; another one into (turn) one and another one into three. We stayed connected well. It was aggressive, but it got him to the lead. And then he just bottomed out too hard with his car and let Josh [Berry] inside of him a couple laps into that run. Bummer because he had a better car than we did and had a shot to win. It just slipped away from us." - Ross Chastain, finished fifth "I mean, just – I don’t know. It’s fine. I was a grind today for sure. I don’t really know how I feel yet, but we certainly didn’t do what we did the last couple of weeks and that was just have a nice clean race. I think the Interstate Camry was definitely capable of competing for the win when we were at our best but just going to the back and to the
front and to the back and to the front, we just didn’t get a handle on the balance, because it changes so much from being back there. I felt like we were in position in stage two to contend for another win, but it got away from us." - Christopher Bell, finished 12th Phil Allaway is the Frontstretch newsletter manager.
