Around the World in Motorsports: April 4-6 |
- In the European Le Mans Series season opener in Barcelona Sunday, AF Corse's Matthieu Vaxiviere took advantage of two fresh tires to take the lead away from IDEC Sport's Mathys Jaubert on the final lap and held on to win the 4 Hours of Barcelona with teammates Francois Perrodo and Alessio Rovera. It is the first time that a LMP2 Pro-Am team has won overall since the LMP2 class was
split. AF Corse's margin of victory was 1.187 seconds over Jaubert, Jamie Chadwick and Dani Juncadella. VDS Panis Racing's Oliver Gray, Esteban Masson and Charles Milesi were third, then Vector Sport's Ryan Cullen, Pietro Fittipaldi and Vladislav Lomko. CLX-Pure Racing's Tom Blomqvist, Alex Malykhin and Tristan Vautier were fifth.
AF Corse won the LMP2 Pro-Am class by 6.329 seconds over Algarve Pro Racing's Oliver Caldwell, Kriton Lentoudis and Alex Quinn. TDS Racing's Mathias Beche, Clement Novalak and Rodrigo Sales were third, followed by Proton Competition's Rene Binder, Giorgio Roda and Bent Viscaal. United Autosports' Oliver Jarvis, Daniel Schneider and Marino Sato were fifth. In the regular LMP2 class, IDEC Sport's Chadwick, Jaubert and Juncadella won by 1.285 seconds over VDS Panis Racing. Vector Sport was third, then CLX-Pure Racing and Algarve Pro Racing's Lorenzo Fluxa, Matthias Kaiser and Theo Pourchaire. This weekend was the debut for the new LMP3 formula with
Toyota engines. CLX Motorsports' Adrien Closmenil, Paul Lanchere and Theodor Jensen took the victory in their Ligier JS P325-Toyota by 1.928 seconds over RLR MSport's Nick Adcock, Gillian Henrion and Michael Jensen. Inter Europol Competition's Timothy Creswick, Douwe Dedecker and Reece Gold were third, then M Racing's Quentin Antonel and Stephane Tribaudni. Ultimate's Jean-Bapiste and Matthieu Lahaye, along with Louis Rossi were fifth. Finally, in LMGT3, the Iron Dames' Sarah Bovy, Michelle Gatting and Celia Martin picked up the class win in their Porsche. Their margin of victory was .786 seconds over the Ferrari of Kessel Racing's Takeshi Kimura, Daniel Serra and Ben Tuck. Proton Competition's Matteo Cressoni, Alessio Picariello and Claudio Schiavoni were third, then Spirit of Race's Ferrari for Duncan Cameron, Matt Griffin and David Perel. AF
Corse's Conrad Laursen, Davide Rigon and Charles-Henri Samani were fifth. For the Iron Dames, it was a nice comeback for them. On Saturday, the team was in position to potentially win the GT class in the Michelin Le Mans Cup opener. However, former W Series competitor Marta Garcia was spun out from the lead and put hard into the barrier, causing an immediate red flag. Garcia spent the night in a
local hospital for precautionary checks, but did not suffer any major injuries. She was hit by AF Corse's Eliseo Donno, who was given a stop-and-go
penalty, plus two penalty points on his license. - In dirt racing, the weather did a complete number on the schedule. The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series postponed the Jason Johnson Classic to October on Thursday. The scheduled Kubota High Limit Sprint Car Series races in Amarillo and Dodge City were
cancelled as well. Those races will not be made up.

Seeking the NASCAR Cup Series Championship: William Byron Expands Lead Despite Missing Out on Perfection by Phil Allaway
William Byron was by far the best driver Sunday. He led the first 243 laps from pole, but pit strategy dropped him back. He ended up finishing second with the highest number of points on the day (56). With
those 56 points and two playoff points, Byron expanded his points lead from 16 to 49 points. That lead is over Denny Hamlin, who moved up four positions with his second straight win. Christopher Bell is up to third after a third-place finish. Bell jumped over Chase Elliott, who had a quiet day to finish eighth. Tyler Reddick is up two places to fifth after a fourth-place finish. Kyle Larson had a miserable day with two crashes into the inside wall on the backstretch. That dropped him four spots to sixth. Ryan Blaney is up three places to seventh after finishing fifth. Bubba Wallace's day was turned upside-down due to the caution during stops, but he remains in eighth. Joey Logano is still in ninth, but was in position for a top-five finish before a bad final stop dropped him to 13th. Alex Bowman hit the wall and had to make toe link repairs. That resulted in a 35th-place finish and a drop from a tie for fourth to 10th. Chris Buescher is still in 11th, while Ross Chastain
has sole possession of 12th. Ryan Preece's day was also ruined by the caution on lap 139. He finished 26th, but still gained a spot courtesy of his eight stage points. Chase Briscoe is down to 14th after a 28th-place finish. Kyle Busch finished 10th and moved up to 15th. He is the last driver in the playoffs on
points. Busch has a nine-point lead over AJ Allmendinger, who moved up one place after finishing 18th. Michael McDowell is down to 17th, followed by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and John Hunter Nemechek. Letter of the Race: Sunday's Goodyear 400 was brought to you by the letter A for Air. After the race, the discussion was about how difficult it was to pass Sunday. If you had a tire advantage, then yes, you could
do it. But on equal rubber, it was a task, even more of one than normal. - Phil Allaway |
Quotes to Remember: Goodyear 400 compiled by Phil Allaway
"I mean, truthfully, I wanted to race until the end. I thought third place [was] kind of what we had. This is just a quintessential race where you just put yourself in the right place, things will fall your way. They didn’t [really] fall our way – our pit crew won it. It comes down to these crunch time situations. I had to do my job on pit road executing, but I have to thank
Sport Clips, [Toyota GAZOO Racing], Progressive, National Debt Relief, Kings Hawaiian, Yahoo!, Coca-Cola, Jordan Brand, Shady Rays, Logitech. My kids, my family, my fiancé. I mean, what a great day! I didn’t see that trophy before the race, but that’s awesome! "[Darlington Raceway] is so special. So difficult to get a win here. We didn’t have the best car
today. We had a decent car, but this is a great team victory. I love getting this victory for the guys behind me." - Denny Hamlin, race winner "This No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet team did a great job. We had a great Chevy all race long. We just needed control of the race there under green and we lost that with the pit sequence. The No. 45 [Tyler Reddick] went really short. We lost a
few spots under the green flag sequence, and that was the difference. We had a decent run that time. [Christopher Bell] did a good job kind of air blocking and just keeping us behind him. It took me a long time to get by him. We had a great pit stop there at the end and was able to line up on the second row. We just needed the front row to have a shot to win here. "It stings to be this close, but at the same time, I’m really proud of that effort by the whole team. It shows what we’re really made of, and hopefully there’s a lot more of that to come." - William Byron, finished second "It does [feel good to finish third]. That was a perplexing race. Even now
thinking back on it, I don’t know what to think. At the beginning of the day, the car performance was not great, not capable of running inside the top 20. All of the sudden, we got that yellow that put me in the front and I could maintain the pace. I don’t know. These cars are very confusing, but overall, great execution from our team and we made something out of being in the back. Got a lucky break, then was able to execute on pit stops and restarts, and walked out of here with a top-five.
Proud of everyone on this DEWALT Camry XSE team and happy to represent my mentor, Rick Ferkel." - Christopher Bell, finished third "I’m proud of the effort that we had. I’m obviously disappointed in the result. I thought we could have won the race and had a good shot at winning the race. We did the last run perfectly. I thought our pit call
was fantastic and our car was fast enough to stay. It had a lot of speed in it late, but a late yellow and then lost the lead off pit road. We didn’t even get to start on the front row and you’re not gonna go from fourth to first in a green-white-checkered here, so it just wasn’t meant to be, but proud of the effort. "If the caution didn’t come out, I thought we
had it won easily. We were so much faster on newer tires. It was a great strategy call running long. Those guys short pitted and they were struggling real bad, and I thought if we could have just got off of two with the lead and the caution didn’t come out, I thought I was gonna kind of ride off into the sunset. That’s just not how it worked, unfortunately. We lost the lead on pit road, lost a front row starting spot and never had a shot." - Ryan Blaney, finished
fifth "We had a really fast Fifth Third Bank Ford Mustang. I’m really proud of everybody. We made some really good adjustments after practice and got it decent for qualifying and really good in the race. That untimely caution just got us and put us behind for the majority of it, so we clawed our way out of it with some good pit
calls. The pit crew did a really nice job today and we got back in the hunt there by the end. We just needed a couple more laps and we probably would have been a little better than some of the cars, but it’s hard to say. We just got a tough break with that one caution." - Chris Buescher, finished sixth "It was a warm one today at Darlington in our Busch Light Fishing Chevy.
We worked our way up to the top 15 early in the race with adjustments. We got caught by that one caution in the middle of the race just after we pitted under green. So we had to take the wave around and work our way back up through the field. Phil and the guys made good adjustments and we were able to get up in the top 10 and we finished seventh. Darlington is one of my favorite tracks and I am looking forward to Bristol next weekend." - Ross Chastain, finished
seventh "It's nice for sure. I know we’ll get more of those, but it was a good improvement. I’m not too worried; feel like we’ll be okay. Just continue to get everyone reps and figure it out. Excited for what the future holds. Know we’ll be good." - Ty Gibbs, finished ninth "It always gets tight off of two here at Darlington and it looked like just me and [Tyler Reddick] got together. It’s hard to say one way or the other if he came up a little bit or I was a little too low. Obviously, you’re trying to keep it out of the fence and clear that bump and everything, so I don’t know. It’s a racing deal, I guess." - Josh Berry, finished 36th (Crashed
out) Phil Allaway is the Frontstretch newsletter manager. He can be reached at phil.allaway@frontstretch.com. Photo is courtesy of Nigel Kinrade Photography.
