Seeking the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs: William Byron's Lead Is Almost Gone by Phil Allaway
William Byron had the worst possible weekend in Chicago. A crash in practice put him at the back of the grid for the race. Then, the clutch broke almost immediately, putting him out in 40th. Byron's lead is down
to only 13 points over teammate Chase Elliott. Elliott had an adventure of his own in Chicago, but still finished 16th. Kyle Larson is still in third after a 13th-place finish. Denny Hamlin blew an engine on his warmup lap in practice, then came from 40th on the grid to fourth in the race. Tyler
Reddick is up one place to fifth after finishing third. Christopher Bell fell from a tie for fourth to sixth due to a late race spin that dropped him to 24th. Ryan Blaney won stage two, then got lapped and recovered to 12th to stay in seventh. Ross Chastain stays in eighth after a 10th-place finish. Chase Briscoe scored a race-high 16 stage points, but a flat tire dropped him to a 23rd-place finish. Despite that, he moved up one place to ninth. Alex Bowman moved up two places to 10th after a rough ride to eighth. Chris Buescher is down two places to 11th after mechanical issues hampered his day. Joey Logano is down one place to 11th after getting spun by Chastain late. Bubba Wallace crashed with five laps to go after contact from Bowman and broke a toe link. That dropped him to a 28th-place finish. He is still the last driver in the playoffs on points, but he lost his margin. He is now only two points ahead of Ryan Preece, who finished seventh. AJ Allmendinger finished sixth and moved up
two places to 15th, while Kyle Busch finished fifth and moved up four spots to 16th. Erik Jones ended up a lap down in 25th and dropped two places to 17th. Austin Cindric broke a toe link due to contact and finished 27th, dropping three places to 18th. Ty Gibbs' third-place finish moved him up

Letter of the Race: Sunday's Grant Park 165 was brought to you by the letter C for Car Breaker. Points leader William Byron never really got started before his clutch broke. Multiple drivers broke toe links. Michael
McDowell's throttle cable broke while leading the race. When it doesn't rain, the Next Gen car can barely hold up over 165 miles in Grant Park. - Phil Allaway |
Quotes to Remember: Grant Park 165 compiled by Phil Allaway
"Epic weekend for us. I'm a lucky guy. I got to drive for two great teams in JR Motorsports and Trackhouse and it just made my job easy. We had great preparation and my cars all weekend were excellent. "Then today the strategy was a bit back and forth. I was probably a bit
conservative at the start and not aggressive enough, but yeah, our pace was good, and then just believing in Stephen. He did a great job on painting the picture on strategy again, and even though we were a little bit out of sync, it was going to work out for the better. "Had some really great battles at the end. The guys at the end I felt were really, really strong, but we probably had a tire
advantage. Yeah, cool to win here again. I've had a great run at this place, and I really enjoy it." - Shane van Gisbergen, race winner "I feel like we had a fast Monster Energy Toyota Camry [today]. Just need some more front turn. Feel like I wasn’t as – free enough to get my points and exits right, but there’s things I can work on as well to make it better. We had a good
day overall and executed well. Just need to be a little bit faster and I think we could’ve got [Shane van Gisbergen]." - Ty Gibbs, finished second "Shane [van Gisbergen] was just a little too far ahead. When we did pit and put those tires on [Kyle Busch] got spun and a couple cars got spun on the restart and we were just in the wrong lane and stacked up and a lot of
the cars that run the same strategy as us we got behind. Lost time trying to pass them and then passing those cars on the older tires. Just part of it. Chaos on a street course at the end there, but I was really proud of our whole 23XI Racing team. This Jumpman Toyota Camry was really fast, it just – we needed that restart to go a little differently. I definitely think we had the pace to get to Shane. It was hard to say how much he was saving or not, but it felt good to have a shot of
it." - Tyler Reddick, finished third "Just a good job by the team. I had some pace and really the whole Progressive Toyota team did a great job. I’ve got to thank the whole team for working hard to kind of get us back to where we were running there. Truthfully, that’s where we were at on pace. It wasn’t a crazy strategy or anything like that. Just thought the car was really, really good. I would’ve
loved to not have to save fuel with [Ty Gibbs] and [Shane van Gisbergen] there just to see how far off I am and how much I stack up. I’m really happy overall with the day." - Denny Hamlin, finished fourth
"Our day started out pretty good. We got a good jump on the initial start there and was able to roll forward and get to third. We tried to go long on that first set of tires, and with those
couple of cautions, it didn’t fall into our favor. That put us on old tires and I spun out getting into [turn 7]. We just didn’t have any left-rear grip. That’s something we’ve struggled with on this car, and it just bit me there. The No. 8 Slurpee Chevrolet team rallied and we were able to rebound. We pitted a couple of times there at the end and had some fresh tires late for some of the melee that was going on in front of us and made up some spots. Our Chevrolet was definitely a top-two or
three car, but it’s good to come home with a top-five finish." - Kyle Busch, finished fifth "We had a really, really good car. We took stage points there and it was really, really tough to pass, even tires held on really well. Ultimately, a really good car. I’m excited for Sonoma. I’m excited for road racing. If there wasn’t such a
jumble up sometimes with how you have to play for points or stages, I feel like we had a really good car. I’m proud of Derrike. Thanks to BuildSubmarines.com, Kroger, Mohawk Northeast and all the partners that are involved with RFK. Like I say every week, I’m happy to be a part of it." - Ryan Preece, finished seventh "I don’t know.. I passed [Bubba Wallace] clean, or what I thought was
clean. I just followed when [Tyler Reddick] passed him. Then he shipped us into [turn] 12; ran us into the fence in [turn 1] and ran us into the fence off of [turn 2]. And then we just sort of pin-balled off of each other and he ended up on the worse side of it, but we’re just trying to go straight off the corner. I don’t know why we did that… I wasn’t expecting that to happen or to get raced like that, but we did. We just have to move on from it and keep digging. I don’t really know what I
could have done much different. I just got into the fence there and you’re kind of along for the ride. It’s just frustrating." - Alex Bowman, finished eighth "Massive day for our United Rentals Chevrolet. The Cup Series isn’t easy. To only have five races with the No. 33 team and leave with a top-10 finish is huge for our group. We started 30th, drove up a little ways
and played some strategy to gain even more ground. I feel like I won the race honestly. I was upset with finishing fourth yesterday in the Xfinity Series race, but to finish ninth in a Cup race feels like I won it. Hats off to RCR, ECR and everyone on this team. We put our heads together, called a great race, took tires when we needed to, and stayed out when we needed to. At the end, it was good enough to get up there and battle with the guys to finish inside the top 10." - Austin Hill,
finished ninth "The throttle cable just broke. I don’t know what caused it or how it got to that spot, but that’s what happened. I feel like we had control of the race. I think it would have been a battle, no doubt. I felt like any time I could open a gap on SVG, I could. We were just working on our strategy. We knew we were going to one-stop it, so I was taking care of
the tires and doing all the things I could. I was behind the pace car and the throttle stuck wide-open. Luckily I got to the switches fast enough before I ran into something, and then a cable broke after that. It’s just a shame. We had a great No. 71 DePaul Chevrolet. We’ve got some good momentum heading into Sonoma next weekend." - Michael McDowell, finished 32nd "Disappointing day in the No. 3 Breztri
Aerosphere Chevrolet at the Chicago Street Race. Crew chief Richard Boswell and everyone on the RCR team brought a really fast Chevrolet to the streets of Chicago. We qualified 10th and thought we would be a contender today in the race. [Carson Hocevar] spun in front of us on the first lap and it ended our day before we could even get it started. It’s a shame and I’m just at a loss for words at this point. We’ll just keep bringing cars like this and hope our luck turns around for us at some
point." - Austin Dillon, finished 36th (Crashed out)
"I didn’t see [the crash] until the last second. I slowed down and I actually felt I was gonna get stopped and then I just kind of got ran over from behind. It’s just a narrow street course and sometimes there’s nowhere to go." - Brad Keselowski, finished 37th (Crashed out) Phil Allaway is the Frontstretch newsletter manager.
