Around the World in Motorsports: July 17 |
- Thursday night's Joker's Jackpot was a very rough event. The 40-lap A-Main started with a terrible multi-car crash in turn 1 involving Bill Balog, Tyler Courtney, Buddy Kofoid, Tim Shaffer, Hunter Schurenberg and Brad Sweet. Sweet was able to continue afterwards, but everyone else was out on the spot. Courtney was taken to a local hospital for treatment afterwards. According to Clauson Marshall Racing, he is aware, alert and can move his extremities. No other updates have been made available. Once the race restarted, Rico Abreu led from the pole, but Aaron Reutzel
charged up to challenge. A failed slide job saw Reutzel drop back. Kyle Larson was able to get back to second. Ultimately, Larson was able to take the lead away from Abreu on lap 22. From there, he held on through a series of cautions to win the Joker's Jackpot and $100,000. Anthony Macri finished second, then Abreu and Reutzel. Corey Day finished fifth. The night was brutal. David Gravel DNQ'd the feature after flipping in his B-Main. Logan Schuchart flipped on the final lap of the A-Main. Tanner Holmes also flipped. A lot of teams will have a lot of work to do if they plan on participating in the second half of the Kings Royal
weekend.
Since a number of outsiders were in attendance, the Joker's Jackpot was not run for points. The Kings Royal races will be a similar boat.

Frontstretch Folio: AutoTrader EchoPark Automotive 400 by Phil Allaway
This weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series returns to Dover for their only visit of the season. Coverage of the Wurth 400 begins with NASCAR Nation Pre-Race at 1:30 p.m. ET on TNT, TruTV and HBO
Max. Race coverage will start at 2 p.m. ET. Regular coverage will be on TNT, while the In-Season Challenge AltCast will be on TruTV. Both broadcasts will be available to stream on HBO Max The green should fly around 2:20 p.m. ET Radio coverage will be provided by local PRN radio affiliates and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Channel 90). Records and facts Last year's Wurth 400 saw Denny Hamlin take the lead with 72 laps to go from Kyle Larson on a restart. Shortly afterwards, a crash broke
out involving Christopher Bell, William Byron, Zane Smith and Bubba Wallace, allowing Hamlin to confirm his lead. From the final restart, Hamlin was able to hold off a closing Larson in the final laps to take the win. The margin of victory was .256
seconds over Larson. Martin Truex Jr. was third, then Kyle Busch and Chase Elliott. Among active drivers, Jimmie Johnson (not entered) has the most Dover victories with 11. Kyle Busch has three Dover victories, Hamlin and Chase Elliott have two wins,
while two others have one victory. All-time, Johnson is the winningest driver at Dover with his 11 victories. Richard Petty and Bobby Allison each have seven wins at Dover, tied for the most on the asphalt version of Dover (the track was converted to a
concrete surface for 1995). David Pearson and Jeff Gordon each have five wins at Dover. Track Facts Track / Race Length: 1 mile oval, 400 laps (400 miles) Banking: 24 degrees Straightaways: 1,076 ft., banked 2 degrees Grandstand

p.m. ET on TruTV Say What?! "I’m excited to get back to a more ‘normal’ oval this weekend. It’s been awhile but we’re strong at these types of tracks coming up. Last week was solid and we needed that but now this is almost like a reset button to get back to what we do best. We’ve always been strong at Dover [Motor Speedway] just haven’t been able to close the deal. I’m confident we will have speed off the
truck, just looking to execute and hopefully close the deal finally." - William Byron "If we didn't have
Bristol on the schedule, I think Dover would be a very eye-opening experience. It reminds me a lot of Bristol with the concrete surface and banking, but at Dover you’re carrying a lot more speed. The lap time isn’t as fast and it feels slower than it really is, but it’s definitely a handful. Dover is its own challenge, just because you have to figure out how to get your car to a place where you’re comfortable carrying so much speed through those really high-banked corners. There are definitely
moments where your mind is probably saying there's no way we can run almost wide open here in qualifying, but we do it every time. It’s a tough track mentally and physically." - Carson Hocevar "Dover is a track I haven’t been historically good at,
but I have a feeling that will change this weekend. Coming off of two road courses, it’s nice to go back to racing on an oval but Dover is a wild race. You feel like you’re flying when dropping into the corner and on the exit with all the banking. It’s a roller coaster." - Todd Gilliland "Dover is a really neat race track. You can definitely move around quite a bit, you can run the bottom, you can run the top. Dover is a really challenging place, it’s a lot of physical abuse on the driver. Jimmie was probably one of the best there, so I’m going to pick his brain before going back there. He had a strong run going there last year as well in the Next Gen car, and
Travis has had some success there in the past as well. Hopefully we have a really good Toyota Camry XSE with Hertz on board. We’re excited to have them on the No. 42 for their first race, and we’ll see what we can do." - John Hunter Nemechek Phil Allaway is the Frontstretch newsletter manager.
