- Dr. Jerry Petty, a renowned neurosurgeon known for his work in the world of motorsports and professional football via the Carolina Panthers, died Tuesday at the age of 89.
Petty is a co-founder of Carolina Neurosurgery & Spine, a Charlotte-based firm. In NASCAR circles, Petty was involved in the sport as far back as the 1970s, serving as a medical consultant to the sport. He was
involved in the treatment of multiple athletes after injuries, such as Dale Earnhardt Jr. after his concussions and Ernie Irvan after his near-fatal crash at Michigan in 1994.
