Around the World in Motorsports: May 22 |
- In Free Practice No. 1 in Monaco, Ferrari's Charles Leclerc was fastest on his hometown circuit with a lap at 103.752 mph. He was .163 seconds faster than Red Bull's Max Verstappen. McLaren's Lando Norris was third, then Williams' Alexander Albon. Oscar Piastri was fifth in the second McLaren. There were a number of drivers that ended up going off into the runoff during the session. That included Leclerc, who went straight at Mirabeau before resuming. However, there was one red flag that involved Leclerc. During the session, Leclerc encountered the slow Aston Martin of Lance Stroll. Stroll had moved over to let a faster
pass before the Grand Hotel Hairpin, then came back on the racing line directly in front of Leclerc. Leclerc ran right in the back of Stroll and broke his front wing. Stroll's car ended up with a broken rear suspension and requires a gearbox change. The hairpin was strewn with debris, resulting in the session being interrupted.
After the session, Stroll was given full blame for the collision. He has been given a one-place grid drop for the race. Free Practice No. 2 saw Leclerc once again go fastest after some repairs to his Ferrari between sessions (he had been complaining of poor handling following his contact with Stroll). This time, Leclerc's quick lap was at
104.637 mph. Leclerc was .038 seconds faster than Piastri. Lewis Hamilton was third in the second Ferrari, followed by Norris and the Racing Bulls entry for Liam Lawson. There were two red flags during the session. The first was when Racing Bulls'
Isack Hadjar had contact with the wall that damaged the rear of his car. He was able to get back to the pits and get repairs. Hadjar was back on track in 15 minutes afterwards. Later on, Piastri slid into the barriers to cause another red flag. He was able to drive back to the pits for repairs before resuming. - The original plan for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series this weekend was to race tonight at Attica Raceway Park, then race at Sharon Speedway Saturday night. However, the recent rains have made this schedule impossible. As a result, the race at Sharon Speedway has been cancelled and will not be made up due to wet grounds. The Attica race scheduled for tonight has been
postponed to Saturday night to allow the track to be worked on.

Frontstretch Folio: Coca-Cola 600 by Phil Allaway
This weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series returns to Charlotte Motor Speedway for the longest race of the year.
Coverage of the Coca-Cola 600 starts at 5 p.m. with pre-race coverage on Amazon Prime Video. Race coverage starts at 6 p.m. ET with the green flag dropping around 6:15 p.m. ET. The race can be heard on PRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Channel 90). Records and facts Last year's Coca-Cola 600 was more or less overshadowed by rain in Indianapolis preventing Kyle Larson from getting to Charlotte in time to run the race. Justin Allgaier raced in Larson's place and finished 13th. In the race itself, it was a race to halfway as crews, fans and everyone present knew that
the weather was deteriorating. Christopher Bell was able to take the lead away from William Byron on lap 189. From there, he was able to hold on the advantage through a couple of cautions until the rain started falling on lap 245 to bring out the yellow. At the same time this was happening, Larson had just arrived to the track from Indianapolis and was prepared to get into the No. 5 Chevrolet in place of Allgaier. However, the rain intensified and NASCAR pulled the cars onto pit road. A while later, the race was called giving
Bell the victory. Brad Keselowski finished second, followed by Byron,
Tyler Reddick and Denny Hamlin. Among active drivers, Jimmie Johnson has the most victories at Charlotte with eight. Keselowski has two career wins and eight others have one each. Johnson's eight career victories is the best all-time on the 1.5-mile quad-oval. Darrell Waltrip and Bobby Allison both have six while Richard Petty, Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt have five apiece. Schedule: Practice: Saturday, May 24, 1:30 - 2:25 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime Video Qualifying: Saturday, May 25, 2:40 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime Video Say What?! "You really have to be able to adjust. That’s a huge swing. We all talk about it. It’s a big part of our meetings. What does the track normally start like and then once it starts cooling off, where does it usually go? And you keep that in the back of your mind. It’s like, ‘OK, my car is doing this, but when the sun goes down it’s gonna
change.’ Is it gonna change for my benefit? Or is it gonna change for our detriment. We have to be ahead of that, so that part is a huge piece of what we look at and what we try to prepare for, and that’s another big thing of staying in the game. Sometimes your race doesn’t start off how you want. You’re kind of off the pace, but maybe it’s gonna come to you. You have all night to work on it. The track is gonna change. Things are gonna figure themselves
out, it’s just how can the teams adapt to everything, so that’s a huge part of the 600 and that’s why you see a lot of guys who are strong early and struggle late, or guys who are struggling early and then come on at the end of that race. That’s why you see this huge change in the field." - Ryan
Blaney "Charlotte is rough, my goodness. The vertical loads when we go into the corners in turns 1 and 2, I get squished into the bottom of the car in the seat, almost harder than anywhere else we go. I would compare it to Dover, but Charlotte is a mile-and-a-half and really fast when you run the bottom. When you run the top of the track up by the wall, it’s almost like a washboard – if
you’ve driven on a dirt road that’s rough and it’s really bouncing really aggressively – that’s what turn 1 up by the wall feels like. In turns 3 and 4, it gets way more sun throughout the year than turns 1 and 2, so it has a lot less grip. When you turn down into Turn 3 there isn’t a lot of grip. Wrapping the line for me is my left-front right down by the apron to have a low exit off of turn 4, or running right up by the wall." - Ross Chastain "The Coca-Cola 600 at home in Charlotte is always a favorite. Two years ago, I did the Xfinity race and the Cup race on the same day, which was quite eventful and something I’ll never be able to top. But knowing I’ve come close to completing 900 miles on the same track in one day makes the 600-mile Cup race seem a little less demanding. We’ve had so much speed in our 1.5-mile
program and I’m excited to get a handle on it Saturday evening. This is the longest race of the year and where we can score the most points. The biggest thing we need to work on is getting in a better position to execute on restarts and we’ll have a couple of shots at that with four stages in Sunday’s race. This race is always an important one for teams and for the families of the military members that we are honoring." - Justin Haley Phil Allaway is the Frontstretch newsletter manager.
