Seeking the NASCAR Cup Series Chase: Tyler Reddick Continues To Lead by Phil Allaway
Tyler Reddick struggled in the middle of Sunday's 500-lap race in Bristol, but he managed to come back to life late and finish fourth. It was not enough to keep all of his points lead, though. Reddick continues to lead the points, but his advantage over
Ryan Blaney is down to 62 points. Denny Hamlin finished ninth and maintains third in points, while Ty Gibbs' first career victory moved him up two places to fourth. Chase Elliott spun late in the race and ended up 22nd. That dropped him one place to fifth. Kyle Larson is up to sixth after leading
the most laps and finishing third. William Byron had a horrible weekend marked by a bad qualifying effort, a steering rack change, then finishing five laps down in 30th. That performance dropped him two spots to seventh. Bubba Wallace finished 11th and has sole possession of eighth. Christopher Bell hit the wall and spun early. He
then limped a damaged car to 27th, dropping two places to ninth. Chris Buescher is 10th, followed by Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano. Carson Hocevar and Ryan Preece are tied for 13th. Hocevar wins the tiebreaker by virtue of his fourth-place finishes at Atlanta and Darlington. Daniel
Suarez is up one place to 15th after a 12th-place finish. Shane van Gisbergen crashed on lap 312 and ended up finishing 170 laps down. Letter of the Race: Sunday's Food City 500 was brought to you by the letter M for Medium. While the race was infinitely less chaotic than the recent Bristol races with high tire wear, you ended up with something of a
happy medium between the races where no one can pass and races where tires struggle to last 10 minutes at speed. - Phil Allaway |
Quotes to Remember: Food City 500 compiled by Phil Allaway
"It’s awesome. It’s awesome to be with great people. To be in this position is great. I’d love for my father to have seen this. I knew he knew it was going to happen and expected it as well. It was [a] great day for us. My boys didn’t give up. Pit crew is just amazing. This is our family. It’s been great. So it’s just such [a] great deal. "Honestly, I didn’t really know or care if I was going to win or not. I thought the race was awesome. I thought we all put on the racing was great. Feel like it’s been us the whole year. I really appreciate always racing Ryan Blaney and Kyle [Larson] too. Those guys always run me real well. We all run together and hard. Hopefully we put a great show on for the fans. Thank you for Team 54, everybody
that’s a part of this whole deal. What a great day." - Ty Gibbs, race winner "Before the last yellow I was side-by-side for the lead and I slipped into three and that kind of cost us a shot to get it before that last yellow. I thought I had a good restart, but the bottom was just hard to hit. I didn’t maybe get the best one and two the last lap and
didn’t have a far enough position, and then I really got a good three and four coming to the checkered, but it was a little bit too late. I’m disappointed we didn’t win, but, overall, I’m really proud of the effort. I had a great day and got better all day. It’s definitely something to be proud of." - Ryan Blaney, finished second "It was just really
aggressive, hard racing there at the end. Ty [Gibbs] did a great job of hanging on with fresher tires behind him. Just proud of this No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet team. We had a great day. [Ryan] Blaney probably had the best car, but his pit crew was putting him behind all day, which allowed us to lead a lot of laps and win both stages. I knew he’d be hard to beat. I was watching my mirror; he’d have a bad pit stop and drive right back up to second with no problem. We were just a little too
free to run the pace he was running around the bottom, even on the top, too. All-in-all, we’ll take it – two stage wins and a third-place finish." - Kyle Larson, finished third "It feels really good. For me, unfortunately, miscommunication before that first pit sequence. Just had my wrong mark. It was a really good bounce-back for our Toyota Camry. Billy [Scott], everybody on this 45 team did a
really good job. Yeah, we had to fight for it all day long. We had more speed this time around, which was great, but unfortunately still fighting brake and steering issues along the way. Very physical day inside the race car. I may even take a day off tomorrow." - Tyler Reddick, finished fourth "Yeah, a clean, solid executed race. It’s what we needed. We weren’t good enough speed-wise for the top
two or three guys. We just hung around that fifth to seventh place all day long. Needed a little bit more. It was a clean, solid day. That’s what we needed. Super happy for Ty [Gibbs]. It’s been a long time coming. To do it the way he did it, on old tires, to beat the two guys that dominated all day long, that I was impressive. Just super happy for him and the whole family. Looking forward to seeing him in Victory Lane." - Chase Briscoe, finished fifth "We weren’t great to start and that’s kind of how we were in practice, but it seemed like when the groove moved up to the top for us we were way better. It was like a different car It’s a pretty awesome day for us. To recover from qualifying 35th at Bristol is tough to do, so, honestly, I’m just so proud of my team. We’ve got to work on qualifying. I think a lot of
it is on me. That’s not a great feeling to have as a driver, but I’m so proud of our fight today. "You hate to say [that you were content] as a driver, but for the day that we had, I was content. I’m proud of my crew chief, Chris [Lawson for] those calls. We were on the same page for two tires. Immediately when the caution came out, I said, ‘I think two tires or even stay out here.’ I’m
thankful he didn’t let me stay out, but two tires was definitely the right call and I’m just really proud." - Todd Gilliland, finished sixth "I don’t know if we kind of just misjudged it, being in Group A [in practice]. I thought we were OK in practice, but to start the race, we were in trouble. It’s a bummer that we didn’t get a chance to work on it. I know Blake [Harris]
and this No. 48 Ally Chevrolet team would have liked some pit stops to try and make the car better and get going back in the right direction. We were just struggling, and then got caught up in somebody else’s mess. "We really need one good week to start getting the ball rolling in the right direction again. Honestly, I thought this could be a really good one for us, even after qualifying. I think this is
a good place for us, historically, but we just didn’t have it today. Hopefully we can get things pointed in the right direction next weekend at Kansas {Speedway]." - Alex Bowman, finished 37th (Crashed out) Phil Allaway is the Frontstretch newsletter manager.
