Around the World in Motorsports: Feb. 12 |
- Alpine announced Thursday that
the 2026 season will be the final year for the Alpine A424 in the FIA World Endurance Championship. This comes as they are choosing to "[revise] its development plan to support its growth strategy." "We have had to take hard decisions to protect the long-term ambitions of Alpine," stated Philippe Krief, CEO of Alpine. "On one side, the automotive industry - and particularly
the EV market - are growing slower than expected. On the other side, to succeed for the long-term, we must continue our ongoing investment into the Alpine product portfolio and Alpine brand. The result is we must take decisive actions to create a brand with a sustainable future." Going forward, Alpine will not operate a factory team from their facility at Viry-Chatillon,
France. It will refocus on innovation in general for Alpine and the Renault Group at large. The Alpine F1 Team is French-owned, but operates out of Enstone in England, a factory built when the team was still Benetton in 1992. Motorsports-wise, Alpine will continue to focus on Formula 1 in the immediate future as a constructor, but they are no longer building engines for the world championship. They also have
a customer GT4 car based on the Alpine A110 that races in Europe.
- World of Outlaws Late Model Series presented by DirtVision teams started their run at the Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park Thursday night. Here, Nick Hoffman asserted himself quickly. Hoffman, who won a regular DIRTcar Late Model feature Wednesday night, took the lead from pole sitter Chris Madden on the first lap. From there, he led all 35 laps to take the win. Hoffman won by a healthy 5.27 seconds over Tim McCreadie. Bobby Pierce was third, then Tyler Erb and Madden. In the points, Hoffman has the points lead through four races by three points over Brandon Sheppard. McCreadie is third, then Pierce and Erb.
- The Super DIRTcar Series feature at Volusia Speedway Park saw Johnstown, N.Y.'s Bobby Varin start from pole and lead early. However, he lost the advantage to
Larry Wight on lap 6. Mat Williamson was able to charge up to second from sixth on the grid, then ended up on Wight's bumper when Darren Smith had issues with 12 laps to go. On the restart, Williamson crossed over Wight and took the lead on the backstretch. From there, he held on to take the win. Williamson won by .516 seconds over Wight. Alex Payne was third, then Justin Haers and Jimmy Phelps.

Frontstretch Folio: Daytona 500 by Phil Allaway
This weekend, the NASCAR Cup Series opens up the season with the 68th Running of the Daytona 500. TV coverage is scheduled to begin with NASCAR RaceDay at 12:30 p.m. ET Sunday on FOX. Race coverage starts at 2:30 p.m. ET. The green flag is scheduled to fly around 3 p.m. ET. Radio coverage will be provided by local MRN radio affiliates and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio (Channel 90). Live in-car
cameras from all 41 teams will be available on HBO Max. Records and Facts Last year's Daytona 500 saw the start of the race moved up due to potential rain. Joey Logano was quite strong, leading 43 laps before debris caused issues under the
hood. A fix was able to get him back up into the hunt. Unfortunately, he would crash out late. A couple of large crashes in the closing laps, including a flip for Ryan Preece resulted in the race going over the scheduled 200-lap distance. On the final restart, Austin Cindric was able to get past Denny Hamlin to take the lead with help from Cole Custer. Contact on the backstretch between Hamlin and Cindric
sparked a big wreck on the backstretch on the final lap. William Byron, who restarted on the fifth row, was able to slip past the wreck and take the lead. With no yellow thrown, Byron held on to take his second straight Daytona 500 victory. He is the fifth driver, joining Hamlin, Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough and Sterling Marlin, to accomplish the feat. Byron won by
.113 seconds over Tyler Reddick. Jimmie Johnson was third, then Chase Briscoe and John Hunter Nemechek. Among active drivers, Byron, Hamlin and Johnson each have three victories at Daytona. Hamlin's three wins all came in the Daytona 500, while Johnson and Byron each have two Daytona 500 wins. Ryan Blaney, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Austin Dillon have two Daytona wins a
piece, while seven other drivers have a Daytona victory in the field. All-time, Richard Petty has seven Daytona 500 wins (the most recent of which occurred in 1981) and ten overall wins in point races, most of all drivers. Cale Yarborough has nine wins, followed by David Pearson with eight. Track Facts Track / Race Length: 2.5-mile oval, 200 laps (500 miles) Banking: 31 degrees Frontstretch: 3,800 ft,

Quotes to Remember: America 250 Florida Duels compiled by Phil Allaway
"We definitely learned a lot. It was great teamwork all the way through. Ryan Blaney was a fantastic teammate there, which is expected. He’s always been that for us and we try to work together the best we can and when we’re able to do that correctly, we can see success together like this. First of all, I’ve got to thank him. Obviously, Nick Hensley, my gas man, that gave
us position off of pit road to where we could defend and not have to try to move forward, so he did a great job. And Coleman Pressley up on the roof did a fantastic job with the info. It's all the things you work on over the offseason, but it’s awesome when it all comes together and you’re able to actually work out the plan. A lot of times people say there’s a plan and it goes out the window on lap one, but for us we were able to work it all the way to the end." - Joey Logano,
winner of Duel No. 1 "A great way to get the blood pumping for sure on a Thursday night. There was a lot going on those last handful, really ever since we came off of pit road after the cycle, we were getting after it. It was a lot of fun. Had some great support there. Carson [Hocevar] did a great job helping me control those lanes, helping get Team Chevy [to] victory lane tonight.
Certainly, owe him an appreciation for just kind of sticking with it, also pushing me well. It's real easy to get people out of control. So, appreciate that and its nice to get the NAPA Chevy a win. Not a 500. I've been here before and not the other one, so you have to kind of learn to take it a day at a time. Look, a great way to start the speed week for our team. Really proud of our effort, everybody at Hendrick Motorsports, the boss, from top to bottom. Their commitment and will to win, is
pretty darn high. Proud to be a part of their team. Good night. Looking forward to Sunday." - Chase Elliott, winner of Duel No. 2 "Luckily, we were just ahead of the chaos. There were a couple close calls. That one before the green-white-checkered I actually got tagged in the left-rear by [William Byron], but it was just very minimal and nothing
happened. I got control of the race with Joey and myself after the pit stop and that caution happened. Then we were just able to line up and push really well together and maintain control of the race and run it to the end. I’m proud of the effort. Good teamwork tonight with a couple of fast cars and I look forward to going to Sunday. I’m happy the thing is in one piece." - Ryan Blaney, finished second in Duel No. 1 "First of all, it’s great to see the Hendrick Engine Shop go one-two-three, and then I had a Spire Motorsports teammate (Michael McDowell) try to push me to the win. It was just a great execution by us. We got nine points and that’s very important for us. We wanted eight and we got nine, so we overachieved on this No. 77 team. Our Spectrum Chevy was really good. I would have loved to have won, but it’s only a one-point difference and the
Daytona 500 pays a lot more." - Carson Hocevar, finished second in Duel No. 2 "Everyone at RCR and ECR Engines did a great job in the offseason. Our Bass Pro Shops/Winchester Chevrolet was fast tonight. The new Chevy Camaro has shown some speed for sure, and it’s nice to be able to shove a line. It’s been a while since I’ve been able to fight those Penske guys up there, and
that was kind of fun tonight. We can work on some stuff to help me when getting pushed, but past that, really happy with the speed. The biggest thing for Sunday is to execute. I have to sharpen up some moves but it’s nice to have the feeling that you can go out there and play offense." - Austin Dillon, finished third in Duel No. 1 "We were just kind of saving fuel the
majority of that first run there. I think we were just kind of pacing off each other, and then the two in front of me were probably pacing off of me. We had the pace really slow. I kind of fell back further than I wanted to be during the green-flag cycle, but our pit crew did a great job. Our gas man did a great job to get us efficiently through our pit stop to still leap frog a lot of the guys we pitted with. And then, yeah, it got crazy there for a while. I’m not really sure how we ended up
shaking out into third in line there, but was happy when it finally got single file. I knew it would be difficult to get to the lead. I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I just wanted to be ready to be able [to] make a move." - Kyle Larson, finished third in Duel No. 2 "I told the guys on the radio, I said, ‘you just never know what Daytona is, right?’ I mean,
it's all the way until the last lap. You never know what's going to happen. And, thankfully, right there, Jimmy didn't have to push. I mean, he could have just got out of the mess and not be in the wreck, and he pushed me there with a good enough run to get around the outside. When they all wrecked, I got around everybody but the 99, and fortunately, I hit him so square that the car didn't get too tore up. I was able to get it back. So, just super happy. I can't believe we made it. It is just
absolutely amazing." - Casey Mears, finished eighth in Duel No. 1 "I felt like I was in a good spot and moving forward in the middle. The [Bubba Wallace] got squirrely on the bottom. It looked like he kind of saved it, I’m not exactly sure. And then, whoever was next to me, hit me in the left rear. I kind of straightened it out against the wall, and then they hit me again and I
spun. "It’s just a bummer. We’ve won this race with a backup car, so I’m not super worried on that aspect. But it does suck that you put a lot of work into the primary and you don’t get to race it. Maybe we will, who knows. In front of the left rear tire, it was pretty hurt, so I don’t know if that’s fixable. But we’ll see. It just stinks to start in the back and not get the points
tonight, but we’ll just move on and get ready for Sunday." - William Byron, finished 22nd in Duel No. 1 (Crashed out) Phil Allaway is the Newsletter Manager for Frontstretch. He can be reached via e-mail at phil.allaway@frontstretch.com. Photo is courtesy of Nigel Kinrade Photography.
