Around the World in Motorsports: March 13-15 |
- Saturday night's World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series Cowtown Classic Night No. 2 at Kennedale Speedway Park was postponed after a tragic accident occurred. A crash broke out early in the feature and officials rushed to the scene. Two emergency services providers crashed into each other, resulting in fatal injuries to one of the providers. The other was seriously injured. World of Outlaws has not publicly identified either of the two officials involved in the incident, nor has
disclosed any kind of an update on the official that was hospitalized. There was no makeup date announced to make up Saturday night's race. Friday night at Kennedale saw a three-way scrum for the lead early on between Bill Balog, Buddy Kofoid and Christopher Thram. After three laps of slicing and dicing, Balog ended up with the lead. Kofoid was able to stay with Balog and managed to retake the lead on lap 30. However, he crashed in turn 3 a lap later. The caution put David Gravel on Balog's tail. The two fought hard on the slippery track. On the final lap, Balog jumped the cushion in turn 4 and that was all Gravel needed to take the win. Gravel won by .444 seconds over Balog. Carson Macedo was third, then Logan Schuchart and Sheldon
Haudenschild. In the points, Gravel has a six-point lead over Macedo. Haudenschild is third, then Schuchart and Donny Schatz. - Interstate Batteries High Limit Sprint Car Series teams were in Las Vegas, racing at the same complex as NASCAR at Las Vegas Motor Speedway's dirt
track. Friday night saw Kyle Larson spin out by himself on lap 1 and drop out of contention. Aaron Reutzel led the first nine laps of the feature before Corey Day ran him down in lapped traffic and took the lead. Once out front, Day opened up a two-second lead before cautions eliminated it. From there, Day was able to hold off the rest of the pack to take the win. Reutzel was second, then James McFadden, Tanner Thorson and Tyler Courtney. Saturday night saw Reutzel lead flag-to-flag to win the SugarBee Blackjack Bash and the winner's check for $21,021. Thorson was second, then Rico Abreu, McFadden and Courtney. Through the first three races of the season, Reutzel has a two-point lead over Thorson. Abreu is third, then Giovanni Scelzi and Courtney.

Seeking the NASCAR Cup Series Chase: 23XI Racing Is 1-2 Once Again by Phil Allaway
Tyler Reddick had a quiet day in Las Vegas. He ran in the top-five early on, but faded to 13th at the finish. Despite this, he added just a little to his points lead. Reddick now leads by 61 points over teammate Bubba Wallace. Wallace moved back up to second
with a ninth-place finish and 13 stage points. Ryan Blaney dropped to third after finishing 16th. Denny Hamlin's victory moved him up eight positions to fourth. Chase Elliott finished second, but dropped one spot to fifth due to a low number of stage points. Christopher Bell has sole possession of sixth after leading 31 laps and finishing
fourth. Kyle Larson and William Byron are tied for seventh. Larson wins that tiebreaker with the third criteria (the sixth-place finish at Circuit of the Americas). Chris Buescher is down to ninth after a quiet run to sixth. Ty Gibbs, with his third straight top-five finish, moved up five places to 10th. Joey
Logano is down five positions to 11th after a 15th-place finish. Brad Keselowski is up four spots to 12th after a 10th-place finish. Ryan Preece moved back into the top 16 in 13th after an 11th-place finish. Michael McDowell struggled all weekend and fell back to 14th after a 26th-place finish. Carson Hocevar cut a tire
right before the end of stage two and couldn't recover, dropping to 15th. Shane van Gisbergen's save on the first lap was the high point of his day as he ended up finishing 36th, five laps down. He fell from fifth to a three-way tie for 16th with Daniel Suarez and AJ Allmendinger. Van Gisbergen wins the tiebreaker by virtue of his
second-place finish in Austin. Van Gisbergen, Allmendinger and Suarez are nine points ahead of Zane Smith in 19th, who finished 14th. Ross Chastain is 20th. Point Standings (1-16): 1) Tyler Reddick

Seeking the NASCAR O'Reilly Auto Parts Series Chase: Justin Allgaier Extends Lead With Stage Victories by Phil Allaway
Justin Allgaier won the first two stages Saturday, but faded late to a fourth-place finish. Despite that, he still scored the most points (of those eligible) and extended his points lead. He is now 13 points ahead of Jesse Love, who finished sixth.
Austin Hill had a quiet day en route to 10th and stays in third. Sheldon Creed was the best finishing regular in third, gaining one place to fourth. Carson Kvapil fell down to fifth after an 11th-place finish. Sammy Smith stays in sixth, while Corey Day is up one place to seventh after leading laps and finishing eighth.
Rajah Caruth slipped to eighth after finishing 18th. Parker Retzlaff moved up to ninth after a 12th-place finish, skipping over Sam Mayer. Letter of the Race: Sunday's Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube was brought to you by the letter S for Speeding. Las Vegas Motor Speedway is traditionally one of the worst tracks on the circuit for penalties.
Multiple drivers got busted for entering too fast, including race winner Denny Hamlin. - Phil Allaway |
Quotes to Remember: Pennzoil 400 presented by Jiffy Lube compiled by Phil Allaway
"It is just so satisfying – so gratifying. You just never know what can happen year over year if you still have it or not. Obviously, I wasn’t totally locked in for the first few weeks. We’ve just been hitting our stride now. This is our bread and butter. These are the tracks that we know we can go win, and we executed, average, on the driver’s part. Not very good – but to still have the
speed to go through the field. This is a team win. The team did it. It makes my job really easy when I can drive Toyotas that fast." - Denny Hamlin, race winner "I felt like our No. 9 NAPA Chevy was a little better there on the longer run. I thought Denny [Hamlin] was starting to fall off, and I was just trying to be as tidy as I could and give myself an opportunity.
We just came up a little bit short. But honestly, with where we’ve been to how we ran today, it was not even comparable. As bummed as I am, I have to check myself back to reality and understand how big of an improvement that was from past races out there [at Las Vegas Motor Speedway]. Just proud of this team. It’s a lot of fun to be right there in the mix with those guys that have won a lot of races out here. Excited about that and hopefully we can keep building on it." - Chase Elliott,
finished second "Overall, I was really happy with today. It was more of what we expect from ourselves. I was just pleased, really, from Stage One on. The balance was similar to what we’re used to. It had some differences, but it wasn’t anything that we couldn’t work through. Just really excited for the future mile-and-a-half races and just kind of dialing in that balance
to get it a little bit closer. I’m proud of everyone on his No. 24 Raptor Chevrolet team. Everyone has really gone to work on this new Chevrolet car. It’s just a new season and we’re trying to get our balance right. I’m happy with it so far." - William Byron, finished third "We weren’t at our best at the right time. Whenever this Interstate Batteries Toyota team
were at our best, I didn’t feel like I drove a very good race. At times, I felt like I had plenty of speed, and a great long run car in the first stage – we drove to the lead, and then I never executed the restarts very well. So, great finish, great day for Joe Gibbs Racing. Still looking for that first win though." - Christopher Bell, finished fourth "The team went to work. Everyone on this 17-group
put in work. We had a solid qualifying effort and that gave us a good pit stall and a good direction to head. We were able to take this Smith’s/Farm Rich Ford Mustang and just steadily work forward all day long. We had strong pit stops. Good restarts. The car handled well. We needed a little bit more turn to hunt the top-five, but that’s a solid first mile-and-half on the year — first true mile-and-half. That gives us a good read going forward for the next handful." - Chris Buescher, finished
sixth
"In the second stage, we were getting really loose. And then to start the final stage, I just didn’t get the launch I needed or the push I needed. I was side-by-side with them and then [Christopher} Bell had a big run behind me and it was going to be hard to block. They got by and I fell back to fourth, and then my balance was just kind of tight that run. I was
hoping to get to a green flag stop, that way we could be in traffic and maybe my balance would be in a good spot and we would have a shot to race for the win. We had that caution just before the cycle was about to start. On the next run, I was just really loose, and I was just kind of hanging on. "Overall, it was good to get another top-10 finish for this No. 5 HendrickCars.com Chevrolet team. I wish we would
have had the balance in a little better place, but it was back and forth every run. All-in-all, it was a good day and I’m happy with it. Chase [Elliott] did an awesome job and William [Byron] was really fast. We had our moments of being fast, so we can look at it and keep building on it." - Kyle Larson, finished seventh
"For one, we had a really good Bass Pro Shops,
Tracker Toyota. That helped. We were able to keep coming through the field. We were fortunate to catch a caution. We just had a really, really good car. I would have loved to not have sped on pit road and bury us because I felt like we could have been in the mix. Just have to clean up my part. You can’t be making those mistakes at the Cup level. It takes you out of a race. Glad we were able to recover; it could have been way worse than what it was. We will go on to Darlington, a place we are
really good, and see if we have another good one." - Chase Briscoe, finished eighth "I felt like we were about an eighth to 10th-place car most of the race and just dog fought our way up there,” said Keselowski, scoring his second top 10 finish of the season. “[Top 10 finishes] always feel good. That’s a nice marker of success. We didn’t get there until the
next-to-last lap, but we fought really hard. I’m really happy with it." - Brad Keselowski, finished 10th Phil Allaway is the Frontstretch newsletter manager. He can be reached at phil.allaway@frontstretch.com. Photo is courtesy of NASCAR Media via Sean Gardner of Getty Images.
