- Alex Zanardi remains in an Italian hospital after suffering serious injuries in a handcycle crash on June
19. On Monday, he underwent five hours of reconstructive surgery on his face. According to Dr. Paulo Gennaro of the Santa Maria alle Scotte Hospital, the fractures were "complex" and required digital and three-dimensional computerized technology to make his face whole again.
As of now, Zanardi is still in an induced coma due to the head injuries suffered in the crash. He is still stable, but his neurological outlook is still not good.
