Seeking the NASCAR Cup Series Championship: Chase Elliott Comes From The Back To Snag The Title
by Phil Allaway
Chase Elliott entered the Season Finale 500k with the pole position. Then, his car flunked pre-race inspection twice due to body issues. That moved him to the back. No worries, as Chase moved
straight to the front and led the most laps en route to victory and the championship. Elliott's final margin was five points over Brad Keselowski, who finished second. Joey Logano finished third and will finish there in points, followed by Denny Hamlin.
Outside of the playoffs, Kevin Harvick had a quiet run to seventh. That was good enough to put him fifth in points. Harvick ended up 39 points ahead of Alex Bowman, who was strong early before falling to a 16th-place finish. Joe Gibbs Racing
teammates Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch ended up tied for seventh. Truex wins the tiebreaker by virtue of more second-place finishes (five to four). Truex finished 10th Sunday, while Kyle Busch was 11th.
Ryan Blaney ended up ninth in points after finishing sixth on Sunday. Kurt Busch moved up one place to 10th after finishing 12th. Kurt jumped over Austin Dillon, who finished 18th
Sunday. Clint Bowyer finishes his final full-time season in 12th.
Matt DiBenedetto moved up one place to 13th after finishing eighth on Sunday. He jumped over William Byron, who was right behind him in ninth. Aric Almirola finished 13th, which keeps
him in 15th in points, while Cole Custer is 16th.
Of those that never made the playoffs, Erik Jones leads that group despite a mediocre 22nd-place finish Sunday. He ended up 37 points ahead of Jimmie Johnson, who finished fifth Sunday. Tyler Reddick finishes 19th in points, while Christopher
Bell is 20th.

Letter of the Race: Sunday's Season
Finale 500k was brought to you by the letter P for Pushover. Literally none of the non-Championship 4 drivers could offer any kind of a realistic fight to the championship contenders all day Sunday in Phoenix. This has never previously been the case in Homestead. - Phil Allaway
|
Quotes to Remember: Season Finale 500k
compiled by Phil Allaway
"Yeah, just crazy. I mean, heck, how could you? I’m not sure I could have sat down and drawn it up any better, you know? So for me, it’s unbelievable. It’s something that I’m not sure ‑‑ well, I know I haven’t let it
sink in yet. I’m waiting on it to hit me and I’m going to break down here and look like a fool in a minute. I know it’s coming, so I really hope I get done with all this media before it happens.
"Just so grateful for the opportunities and the things I’ve had over the years, great people. My mom and dad and their support obviously has been from the beginning. Mr. Hendrick came in and really changed my life when he wanted to help. Not to
sound like a NASCAR driver, but NAPA Auto Parts, too, coming in when they did. 2014 wouldn’t have happened without them and the championship that came that season. And man, they’ve been a champion partner for years. Now they have a championship to go with it.
"Very grateful for a lot of great people, more people than I named that have got me here today." - Chase Elliott, race winner
"I would have liked to have one of those late-race yellows like we saw in the truck race and the Xfinity race. I thought we were pretty good there and just didn’t have the track position to make it show. I knew we had
a good shot at the end of the second stage and just couldn’t keep it up in a spot to where we could have the lead. I am really proud of the speed we had in the Discount Tire Ford. It was a solid day. I just wish we had one more spot." - Brad Keselowski, finished second
"I just didn’t have the speed at the right time. Early in the race our Shell Pennzoil Mustang was really fast. Our pit crew was on it. Our strategy got us out front there at the end, but the 9 seemed like he lit off
there pretty good there and that last run was able to go really fast, and then got another vibration there towards the end of the run and lost the turn and was still a little free off. We were close. Everyone executed and did their job and that’s what we should be most proud of and is how far we’ve come from the beginning of the season to now as a team. There’s a lot to be proud of. It stings not winning. I’m not going to lie, it hurts, but at the same time we’re stronger because we went through
it." - Joey Logano, finished third
"We just needed a little bit of speed and handling. Just a little bit every lap. It was so, so small. At time we were pretty good and maybe I had the fastest car, but it was just a few laps here and there. We just
needed a little bit more. Obviously, this package in particular we weren’t great this year and this was one of our better runs with it, but it just wasn’t enough really." - Denny Hamlin, finished fourth
"I’ve let in about as much as I can. I feel like the off‑season will happen, and I won’t have team meetings and 2021 planning meetings, and my trips to the shop won’t be as frequent. I’ll still go and still be around
HMS just because it’s home.
"But I think as next year comes around and I don’t go to Daytona for the 500 and those firsts that come along, that’s when it will take deeper ‑‑ it’ll continue to set in deeper and deeper then.
"But I feel like I’ve had a special week, a lot of friends in town, I’ve spoken a lot on the phone, a lot of texts, very meaningful conversations, and very thankful that I’ve had that from friends, family, a lot of my peers here today, so I’m feeling pretty full right now." -
Jimmie Johnson, finished fifth
"We had a really good Menards/Moen Ford Mustang today. We worked on slight balance changes throughout the race and felt like we had a top-five car. We got something on the grille late and I was losing power, so I lost
a spot late which stunk. Big thank you to Todd Gordon and this entire team. I felt like we made a bunch of progress throughout the season with communication, even with the challenges of this year. I look forward to coming back stronger in 2020." - Ryan Blaney, finished sixth
"Finished 2020 with a good top 10 finish today. We struggled a bit at the beginning, but we kept working on it and made up ground throughout the race. It was good to get a top 10 for Chad’s last race with us and as a
crew chief. Great job to Chase (Elliott) and the No. 9 guys on the championship as well. They did a phenomenal job the last two races. I’m looking forward to the off season and then getting after it in 2021. Hopefully we’ll be fighting alongside those boys a lot." - William Byron, finished ninth
"We battled; we battled today, we battled all year and we battled through the playoffs. We had an incredible win in Vegas and some great turnarounds at tracks that we struggled at this year. I couldn’t be more proud of
Matt McCall and all the guys at Chip Ganassi Racing. We were bringing better cars throughout the Playoffs. We’ve got to battle as a team, we’ve got to do good things as a team, and we have to win and lose as a team. To be top-10 overall after the year is done; I’m done with 2020! Thanks to Monster Energy, Chevrolet, GEARWRENCH and all the employees at Chip Ganassi Racing." - Kurt Busch, finished 12th
