- NASCAR's two-day NextGen test on Charlotte Motor Speedway's ROVAL wrapped up Tuesday evening. Tuesday's action saw NASCAR experiment with holes cut in the rear window and small NACA ducts on the windshields in order to cure the interior heat issues. Additional ballistics testing would be required before they could be used in actual races.
As noted in Monday's Newsletter, times were skewed during the test due to NASCAR not penalizing drivers for missing the chicanes or otherwise cutting the course. According to the available times, Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 19, shared by Denny Hamlin and Martin Truex Jr., was fastest at 104.463 mph, three seconds faster than anyone else.
The majority of the teams were in the 81 or 82-second bracket for lap times. Times were likely closer during the test than they were Sunday during the Bank of America ROVAL 400k.
There was some trouble during the session. Roush Fenway Racing's Chris Buescher spun and nosed into the barrier at one point. Ricky Stenhouse Jr. spun exiting turn 2, but managed to avoid the wall. Also, Jacques Villeneuve had a big moment exiting the infield, but avoided the wall in his Team Hezeberg Ford.
- Supercars announced Tuesday afternoon (Wednesday morning in Australia) that the debut of new Gen3 Supercars, originally scheduled for 2022, has been pushed back to the 2023 season. Reasoning for the move includes the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, which has been
far more disruptive in Australia than in the United States since there are currently bans on land movement between states and for more people, it is still impossible to get in and out of the country (although that will be changing soon). In addition, there are supply chain issues in getting the cars constructed in time for the start of next season.
The official unveiling date for the Gen3 cars is Dec. 3 at Mount Panaroma Circuit in Bathurst, as part of the six-day race weekend for this year's Repco Bathurst 1000. The plan is that the Gen3 will undergo a public test program in 2022
during Repco Supercars Championship race weekends, so fans will get used to the new cars before races begin in 2023.
